Valve Index ever go on sale?
I want to get into VR. I did a lot of research and think Valve Index VR Kit is the best for what I want. It is $1,000 though. I can buy it now but it is something I can wait for if it goes on sale for Christmas or something. I was just wondering if it is worth waiting for a discount? Has it ever gone on sale before? Or should I just pull the trigger on it now if I want it since it will take a couple weeks to get here anyways.

Hi,
When I search previous version and actual version : I never see price change (eventually get another game)

Price might drop next year or later if that is when the next gen of VR comes out and solidifies.

Its bleeding edge tech so far with the finger tracking controllers; so anything that comes out cheaper with similar features might cause a drop in pricing [HP's upcoming set has promise and rumoured patent holdings by Sony for PSVR]. How much is to be seen based on supply demand and competition.

TLDR; not for a while, and probably not by much.

Discounts are needed to boost sales figures when they dip. Valve currently sells more Indexes than they can manufacture, so no need for sales. They have enough buyers that can pay the asking price. You can monitor delivery times, no chance for discounts as long delivery times are 8+ weeks.

There is not much competition either. HTC flopped with Cosmos and FB signed off from PCVR, they are out for good. Reverb G2 is coming and that seems to be their main competitor now, but situation is little bit different than the discount war between Vive and Rift years ago.

The new HP Reverb G2 is gonna change the paradigm... again. I would wait.

This.... Check out comparisons between Index and Reverb G2 you might change your mind on the Index.
Personally, I never liked that the Index had plug in controllers, batteries don't last for ever, what then, another set of controllers? $369.00 I'd rather buy 4 rechargeable batteries

You are going to use same controllers forever? With G2 you can't switch to new controllers (Unless HP specifically upgrades them). G2 don't even use same controllers as other WMR headsets so you are locked what HP provides to you. With SteamVR tracking headsets you can easily get new controllers when old ones go obsolete and I have never heard anyone used controllers so long that they battery dies before the go obsolete. I use Vive Pro with Index controllers (it wands went obsolete against the competition, so I upgraded). Very easy to switch to new controller model whenever any company providing SteamVR tracking headsets introduces new ones, while with G2 you most likely need to change the headset if you want to change controllers for better ones.

Controllers are the main reason I wouldn't go for G2. I don't want controllers that need batteries and that I couldn't upgrade. Headset might be good, but controllers are dividing people with that headset.

^^^ Well I guess there's 2 sides to every medal, I'm getting the HP Reverb mostly because it has batteries that I can switch.... and since the reviews seem to favor the HP for clarity it helps too ;)

Thank you guys for the replies. I looked a lot at the Reverb G2 and the Valve Index. The index looks like it takes the cake on controllers and the G2 has a really sharp screen. It is real tough choice. I think I am more interested in controllers over the graphics to be honest so I will probably take the advice and wait for the index to go cheaper. Maybe the Reverb will take the spotlight and a lot of people will go that route vs the Index forcing the Index to lower in price on order to sell.

The headset itself yes, by leaps and bounds. But the controllers for the Reverb G2 is a step back in many aspects in comparison to the controllers for the Index and Rift. There's some YouTube videos explaining why.

You can jerryrig up Index controllers with the G2 if you have some basestations laying around and some very specific Bluetooth dongles, but the total cost brings it to nearly what the Index costs anyway.

Who knows if it will go on sale. The Steam controller went on a 90% sale before they sold out fully from the Steam store. So it may go on sale in its final days on Steam, which probably won't be for a long time.

bruh what a necropost
also no chance of valve doing a sale of 90% on VR tech that's still at the forefront a year or two later

They were selling far more than they could make. I don't think about it in the near future. But who knows, Valve is from outer space.

You can get Index base stations and Knuckles to use with your G2. Best of both worlds!
