VIVE HMD error 208 after update to 1.13.10
I was using my Vive (non-pro) HMD a couple weeks ago. SteamVR updated today to 1.13.10, and now I am getting error 208. I've tried everything I can think of: new Nvidia drivers, clean install of SteamVR (both beta and non beta) different USB and HDMI cables. Nothing is working. I'm getting this in SteamVR...

I have the same error despite installing windows from scratch and switching wires/reset links. I really believe it is the update that caused this. I also have the OG Vive.

I was afraid of that...

When I generate a SteamVR system report is states that my tracking is 0. The update bricked tracking so that is why my controllers and base stations is not tracking despite being connected. (Green LED after pairing except for Headset)

Yea everything is green for me but the HMD. When I turn it on I hear the Windows new device recognized sound. Also when I unplug either the HDMI or USB it makes the device disconnected sound, so none of my cables are bad. It’s software for sure. This is disappointing that a 800 piece of hardware can be bricked by a forced software update that can’t be rolled back. Of course still nothing from anyone from Steam commenting on this. I would recommend any reading this that is considering buying a VR setup wait to buy any VR gear until they fix SteamVR or someone comes out with a third party app.

SteamVR support seems not actively support their software issues here in the comment sections, which is fairly silly and unprofessional.

Steam SHOULD have a group of moderators that ACTIVELY support the user base across all platforms and respond to Comments in ALL STEAMVR forums with at least basic acknowledgement of existing problems and support on how to at least temporarily rollback SteamVR drivers.

----------------======== Having said that...., Follow these steps and use SteamVR in offline mode while SteamVR is fixed =============-----------------

Step 1.)

Go and Download a version of SteamVR (i.e, a zip file of say version 1.11.0 to 1.12.0) which is approximately 5Gigs from somewhere online (do a google search...)
___________________________________________
Step 2.)

Exit SteamVR and ALSO exit Steam
__________________________________________
Step 3.)

DO NOT uninstall any Headset drivers or anything via the Windows Install / Uninstall or SteamVR because your drivers are working FINE.. the problem is simply SteamVR.
_______________________________________________
Step 4.)

Go to your \\program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ ...... folder then cut / copy and paste the "SteamVR" folder to another backup location on your computer...
______________________________________________
Step 5.)

Disconnect from the internet (make sure your Internet connection does not automatically reconnect)
_____________________________________________________________
Step 6.)

Unzip / unrar the 1.11 or 1.12 version of steam that you downloaded. (The completely unzipped /unrar'd files should be already in it's own "SteamVR" folder.
___________________________________________________________
Step 7.)

Copy this SteamVR folder to (or to replace) your \\program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\
_______________________________________________________
Step 8.)

Go to your newly copied "1.11 or 1.12" version of SteamVR which is located in:

\\program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\bin\win64\

Find the "vrstartup.exe" file and then RIGHT CLICK and drag to your desktop (make a shortcut on your desktop)...

THEN right click on the vrstartup.exe shortcut, choose properties, choose the "shortcut" tab, Select "Advanced.." check the "Run as Administrator" box.. press okay, then apply.
__________________________________________________________
Step 9.)

"If" you have any specific headset driver files from the previous / (Non functioning version of 1.13 of SteamVR)) that we copied and pasted as described in "Step 4" ((these Driver files would be located in \\program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\drivers\

Step 9a)

If you discover that such headset driver files exist in the Non functioning version of SteamVR, Then you need to copy any paste such driver files (a file folder etc) into the \\program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\drivers\ folder.
____________________________________________________________________
Step 10.)

(With your computer disconnected from the internet) simply click on the vrstartup.exe shortcut that we created in Step 8 and enjoy properly working SteamVR.

________________________________________________________

Note 1: You will be advised that steam is working in Offline mode etc,, so you need to just accept that.

Note 2: Obviously, you are offline, so no Multiplayer / online content etc.

Yeah, software is just a piece of SHEET. Downgrading to 1.12.5 did the job for me. Ask Valve how to do it. Just kidding.

Went through steam support and the best they came up with was to contact HTC for a hardware failure replacement. Pretty sure its a software issue...

So to answer the issue... this is what I did... and it worked. Read all the way through but to get the older depots you have to use this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44HBxzC_RTg
