Is Monoscopic possible for better performance?
Hello, I'm new to VR and SteamVR. I have a cheap WMR headset, and it seems to work decently. But my computer/GPU isn't top-of-the-line, so it does have some performance issues with more demanding games (such as DCS World).

I would love to be able to use my headset to play games so I can get a more immersive experience (especially with the headtracking ability), but to be able to do so without the added performance stress of true virtual reality (Stereoscopic).

So is there a way to set SteamVR to use a Monoscopic rendering to my headset, so it only needs to process and draw one perspective, which I'm assuming would perform much more like drawing to my monitor?

Please forgive me if I'm using the wrong terminology. Basically, I'm looking for a single perspective being duplicated for both eyes. It may not provide depth, but I'll still be able to use my headset for full movement, and hopefully, it would really boost performance.

Thank you!

buy cheap, get cheap with VR. Save for a good VR headset and PC.

Digital Combat Simulator World is a realistic Free-to-Play. It is not VR native, and it is a demanding game, maybe the best option is lowering game performance.

Your terminology is perfect. I have never heard of this hack. Even VR movie watching apps render a flat movie screen 10 feet away stereoscopically. There was a one-eyed guy asking if one eye could be disabled for a similar performance gain... he got no answer.

Thank you all.

DCS World seems to work just fine on my computer on lower settings without VR. So I'm looking to be able to use the headset I already have for the headtracking (it's invaluable for DCS) without the added performance stress from Stereoscopic rendering.

Eventually, I plan to get a higher-tier VR system. But for now, I already have acceptable equipment for my gaming. I'm just looking to see if there's an existing option in SteamVR to render in Monoscopic. If so, then I can do even more with what I have now, which is good, because upgrading at the moment isn't really an option.

As some of you might know theres this little workaround for falcon bms to work in 2d with an hmd
https://wiki.hoggitworld.com/view/BMS_VR_Setup
You could apply this workaround to dcs by forcing the dcs vr mode off.
i dont know for shure how many fps you loose thrue software but it would definetly perform better than dcs 2.5 in vr.

when you say it runs just fine without VR how would you describe it?? a locked 30fps? 60fps? with the odd stutter? you could try play with legacy repojection turned on and locking the hmd to 45fps. that was made to lower the entry ceiling on under powered hardware.

Yes, I can get locked 60fps (v-synced) with the odd stutter in DCS in non-VR. Thank you, I'll try the legacy repojection :-)

those odd stutter you see in non vr mode will be catastrophic in vr 60fps will be something like 22ms (milliseconds) you will need to have a good a ms of 10.9ms for a smooth experience. best of luck but if you have stutter in non vr it will very noticeable in vr.
