Help! Do the HTC SteamVR Base Station 2.0 work with the valve index?
I've been wondering if they are compatible with the headset+controllers because I already have those and obviously don't want to buy the index ones if I don't have to. Anyone knows?

do you have the square bases or the curved ones?

Yes, they are exactly same. HTC doesn't even make their own 2.0 base stations. SteamVR tracking 2.0 base stations that comes with Vive Pro full kit (or bought separately from HTC) have Valve's logos on the back. Those are made by Valve, not by HTC. Look the back of your base stations it reads there. I'm using Index controllers with my Vive Pro (and the 2.0 base stations from the full kit).

Square ones are older steamvr 1.0 base stations. I was talking about 2.0 base stations based on your post (I though you had Vive Pro because you asked about that). Those 1.0 base stations are manufactured by HTC, but Valve was developing them. They should still work based on this[www.windowscentral.com].

Generally speaking new 2.0 tracking devices work with older 1.0 base stations, but old 1.0 tracking devices won't work with 2.0 base stations. (more info[www.vrandfun.com])

I am talking about these ones.

Shouldn't really make a difference does it?

For using Index on a normal home environment, single room, there is no difference. You can also use older headesets (you have OG Vive?) with those old base stations, while old headsets and accessories (like OG Vive, its controllers or older model Trackers) won't even work with 2.0 base stations. Newer 2.0 version just gives ability to use larger room size and possibility to use more than 2 base stations (plus there was a demo about moving between multiple rooms some years ago).

I have 2.0 base stations (from Vive Pro) in my study and 1.0 base stations (from Vive) in living room and the only difference is that I can use Vive Pro in both rooms, but I can use Vive only in living room.

The Index and its controllers (the Knuckles) can use any base station.
