JUST BLACK in Rift Headset, can hear sounds
EDIT- I fixed the issue that was happening to me, the answer is in the comments, hope it helps any of you going through the same thing
------

Something happened over night, there was an update to steam vr, now when I load it, it's just black, I can see my guardian wall, but nothing else. If I press a button I can hear the spray paint tool or whatever popping up.. what is the deal? how do I fix this?

it means the video driver might need update. your card driver.

^^ if that doesnt work probably contact steam support/oculus support

could also mean you are using an adapter for laptop not made for high end deliver. Rift S has the small display part adapter in one of the sleeves.

I am using the oculus rift, it was working fine last night, only thing I can think of that changed is that it showed me there was an update to steam vr. I tried uninstalling it, installing a beta version.
I can load any game from within oculus rift home, but steam vr loads, but i just see a black box.. around the very small edges of the screen I can see what i'm supposed to see if that makes sense. it's like a black box is blocking my view
I can hear the sounds and everything.. just a sliver around the edge of the black box I can see. I will check to see if there was an update to my gpu, which is a 1080 ti ftw3
my cpu is amd ryzen 9 3900x
windows 10
32 gb of trident z neo rgb ram 3600Mhz

it's very strange

oh. uninstall and reinstall steamVR. it will fix your issue i think. when steamVR loads, it grabbs the data from oculus regarding the chaperone. this usually fixes it. uninstall completely, redo your oculus callibration, install steamvr.

I fixed the issue, I did uninstall and reinstall both normal version and Beta version. That did not fix the issue, This is what fixed it for me

so anyone else having this problem, load up steam VR and go to settings, and then go to STARTUP/SHUTDOWN tab under settings, then go to MANAGE OVERLAYS, I have Turn Signal, I turned it off, also turned off advanced settings, then I went below that to manage addons and made sure that gamepad support was turned on.
But, for some reason it was something to do with Overlays, that is why I could see just a sliver around the edges of the screen or headset.
I'm not sure why this happened, but that fixed it.

Heyo, I think I'm having the same-ish problem with my Rift CV1. It works fine on Oculus games but SteamVR give out and goes black after a few minutes, even if no game is running. It'll go black and claim there was an error with communication between Oculus Client.

Changing the overlay seemed promising at first, but it turned out to not be the true solution. :/
Worth noting: I don't use TurnSignal, but it still mentioned listed one overlay.

Patch notes from an Oculus update that went up a few days ago mentioned it solved a similar-sounding bug. Also, while my Rift is essentially out of commision because of this, using Quest Link works with no problem.

Any thoughts?

hey CasualCheetah, i managed to fix my problem but it might be different for you. I own razer products so I have razer cortex installed. In razer cortex there is a setting called "Boost" and when I turned it off, it completely fixed my issues. If you do not own razer products or razer cortex I'm not sure if I can help you. You can also go to the oculus website, go to downloads and download Oculus again. However, do not delete Oculus first. In doing this, it gives you the option to repair the Oculus client. This also helped with framerate drops and freezing. I hope it helps bud.

i'm not sure what would cause that, have you tried using DDU uninstaller and uninstalling your GPU drivers and install them fresh again, newest drivers? if not I guess it's worth a shot. but i'm not sure what would cause it to just randomly stop working

Thanks for the responses ;)

With turning off Cortex's Boost seems to be the easy solution, I tried removing the similar-ish NVidia Experience app as well as using DDU to wipe and reinstall the latest GPU drivers. No dice.

Upon further experimenting with the Oculus app itself, I’ve bumped into unexpected game crashes, occasional notifications about HDMI cable issues that immediately resolve themselves, and bits about antivirus blocking app installations (despite having disabled it temporarily).

I gave some thought to the idea of a shorted/iffy Rift cable, but the error still occurs while the headset is simply idle on the ground with SteamVR in the background. Plus, Oculus doesn’t sell official cables anymore and eBay’s prices scare me. A bad HDMI port? I’ve only got HDMI port one on the GPU [1060] and I’ve heard negative things about using an HDMI->DisplayPort adapter for VR use. I made sure to give the headset-end of the cable a good check and everything seems to be in order there.
