Dont go with Vive and Steam, if you are still deciding ( trigger warning: a subjective advice)

The thread became kinda huge, didnt expected so many emotions and brand identity to be honest,


To sum it up, atm we have a device that is on pair with vive hardware-wise that costs less then a half, comes with 7 free games and 100 bucks/eu giftcard, got more access to AAA vr content out of the box and belongs to a company which is activly supporting vr content development with hundreds of millions of dollars.

It was hard for me to decide which device to get, since vive got slightly better roomscale (or much better in really large rooms) but in the end iv got oculus because of better screen (sharper text) and the godlike controllers. Only later after i started to discover vr content on both platforms it became clear how much superior oculus is.
Steam vr library is full with underdeveloped, unpolished gameplay experiments and there is only a handful of good games. On ocolus we already have a library wirh dozens of exclusive games that offer 10h + gameplay. I dont know where to start - chronos, edge of nowhere, landfall, unspoken and many many more games that are playable on vive only with workarounds and sometimes worse controls. Already next week oculus is getting two more major exclusives with lone echo and wizards tale.
The other thing the content seem to be cheaper, oculus summer sale started for example yesterday - first summer bundle is 70 bucks with climb, raw data, landfall and edge of nowhere.

My 2 cent, had to share my insights.



After 12 pages of angry replies, I edit the head post with my last input, maybe to make stuff a bit more clear. In any case have fun with VR regardless of your pick.

Maybe I answer some of you a bit later, but its getting tiresome, I already answered most of this, and I dont think i want to go for ad hominem flaming, not my cup of tea lads. Fun comparision to "heretic" i guess it reveals a lot about fanboyism.

One thing regarding going exclusives paths: oculus fu ckeud up the release not having touch controllers, its the major reason for more vive sales last year, guess they are trying to balance it out somehow. Not the smoothest way - but whatever, exclusives is a usual thing in gaming + most exclusives are timed, imo not a big deal. All the hate is a chidlish triviality, in the end its buisness.
Regarding my own fanboyism, yeah I like the sleek oculus shop and the expirience they provide, i just like it - feels fresh and polished. I like the content they provide and I like the quality. I like all the aaa stuff i can play next months and I can look forward to.
I am very dissapointed about what i see on steam, its just not the same - to much garbage, only few big games I want to invest my money in. I have refunded 5 vr games on steam last days. The best thing I played on steam, I dont have in oculus shop is The Accounting (what a gem! ). I consider the lack of polished good content a developer support issue and the low quality control, maybe I am wrong, actually I dont really care, I just get more candy in oculus shop. I am here to consume the content - simple. Still I will switch to another plattform as soon as I see more content or features I dont want to miss there.

A short story, which might explain my approach. My first own pc was a 386, i had a numerous consoles - as a kid, some even from china lol, even some soviet stuff. I always picked the stuff I am curious about, which i wanted to expirience, i had n64 and playstation 1, never bought an xbox lol, had fun with ubuntu for programming, and did not comdemn windows in early 2000, i just used the systems that gave me the stuff i wanted, I am using an adoroid phone and an ipad tablet, using apple notebook for programming and music editing and an alienware rig for mobile lan party gaming, build my own pc at home. I am still buying consoles for exclusives I want to play. Really wanted to pick the switch only for zelda, but vr came in the way. I consider facebook a tool i can use for good and a tool that can ♥♥♥♥ uninformed people off, but i usually laugh at people who whine about privacy - learn the mechanisms of the tool you are using and learn at what cost this tool comes. Then decide if and how you pay this cost, its about clearing and education - its personal responsibility. And no I dont think that some chidlish leftist "whats better for the consumer" theories have place in my entertaiment descisions. Market is a rough thing, people are earning cash by all means, from what i saw from oculus so far - its just another new brand that is trying to survive and be competitive - no pure evil spotted. Considering steam is a huge monopoly, I like to see the competition sicne I always believed its always good for the innovation and the health of a medium. I dont have any harted for steam, i just think the centering the market around one platform isnt a good thing.

To kinda explain why I am so exited about oculus and why I thought its a good thing to advice people to go with it, this is my gaming shelude for the next weeks:
finishing lovecraftian horror edge of nowhere - pure dread and very on point regarding what makes lovecraftian horror a big thing. Didnt expect the good story and creativity in the use of vr medium.
starting dark souls zelda mix - chronos
buying mage's tale - dungeon crawler rpg from creators of bards tale
playing lone echo enders game-like multiplayer beta and wait for full release next monhts
now and then playing the unspoken and onward multiplayer, some raw data maybe. and maybe i finally try workouts in climb with wristwights. next months vr - project - finishing a sculpture in medium oculus app, and 3d printing it.
And there is no end in sight, will have to find some time for willsons heart and classics like the job simulator - more new games are coming to oculus this year and there is a ton of stuff I have to discover.


The thing is, I doubt i could do it with steam only. Sure i would find few more good games other then elite, raw data, pavlov an onward, maybe solus project? Idk i will need to search. But I dont see myself sinking my teeth in stuff like audioshield and an another wave zombie/ bow thingy. Its still good stuff for some people. but nothing I am really looking for, when i am discovering the possibilities of a new medium like vr. At the same time i dont have this problem with oculus store. And yeah lads, keep in mind subjectivism is included, tastes differ.

The last thing I can advice many of you - dont get involved in market politics, in the end its consumerism and you are paying the cash not to be a part of one team, but to consume and to experience the content, pick the stuff that makes you feel exited like a little kid, not the stuff that is considered the right thing, in the end the "considered"- part is mainly a good marketing.

Update - the price is 400 bucks for a oculus touch bundle with 7 games on amazon + you get a 100 bucks giftcard for oculus store if you are a prime member. In europe its 450 eu. Same on oculus store.
For this price its a nobrainer to go with oculus over vive atm, even if you prefer bit larger roomscale.

@Mous I never used terms like right or wrong - I said competition is a good thing for the market and for the developers. If steam is not the only major platform for vr games in 15 years like it is for pc games atm, its a good thing.

Fot 450 and 7 GOOD GAMES I'd probably take it.
But I fear those 7 games arent worth it.
And weeks later I could just sell it used on ebay again if there are not enough points to keep it with the Vive. I wonder how much money Id get for a used Rift that I bought for 450???? Lol

450eur is a bad strategy. Going down with the price always is a bad move.
It only shows the consumers the device is worth less and that if we only wait long enough it will eventually drop again. Like it does now(?).
The publishers Blizzard and Activision for example barely ever go down with the prices until the gamers give up and just buy the damn game for the full price. Same with the Vive. It is most likely very expensive to produce(and develop!) and the asked price is not much higher. The Vive went down 50$ on the sale again. Last time it went down 50$ on a black friday.

I used to buy/sell on eBay but no longer trust or use it. Besides, with second hand electrical items, you never know how well they've been looked after, if they actually work or how long they will last after purchase (if they actually arrive).

Uhm ...wow..your link is from 2014. Lol That was the time when people sold their preorders before they even arrived. If ebay works or not, or if used is good or not, is not the matter here. Thing is, you can always easily sell the Rift/Vive for good money there.

If the 450eur thing isn't true by CanIBite you (Ouclus Rift + Touch + 7 games for 450eur in germany), Ill just block him and never want to see him again. Then the autism really is strong with him.
It is one thing to make jokes and people laugh about it. But another thing to just spam and troll the forum because of personal difficulties/illness etc..

Yes indeed it was from 2014 but was linked for info. Not sure if Facebook/Oculus still maintain no support of second hand headsets or not! It does matter to a degree if a person buys one off eBay and finds that they are out in the cold when it goes wrong. S'pose this is not unusual in todays market as many companies do not honour waranties on 2nd hand goods (if they are still valid).

I like your sense of humour RED-FROG. Likewise I added him to my blocked list a week or so ago.

its facepalm material here, yeah its a better strategy to raise vr entry point to 1k so noone can afford it and devs have no intension to develop stuff since not enough people can buy it. guys, its like talking to cultists at this point lol. lower vr headset price entry point = good for all of us. the concept is not that hard to grasp, even for a dogmatic potato @Frog

You are correct, it is there but boy do they not bring attention to it. I didn't see it when I went to the pay earlier due to the deal price being down the page and mentioned in tiny writing.

Seriously, if you go to the page (depending on browser size), the deal is hidden under the contact details. And then when you do scroll down the deal price is in teeny tiny writing compared to the huge 589

They did quite a lot of advertisement with brochures..The website of the store is a mess, always been.

I think by christmas it could be the standard price for oculus wordlwide. By then it will be a nobrainer to go with oculus, despite the slightly better roomscale for larger spaces with vive. Unless vive finally goes down with its price. Technically the headsets are on pair (still i prefer oculus ergonomics, controllers and the earphones) but you pay more then x2 of current oculus price for vive atm.
Actually its a very good news, thats the way vr can finally arrive on mainstream gaming market.

But you're not taking into account that a lot of people hate paying for even the cheapest of software and resort to piracy. The same will apply on VR headsets where they will try to find a way to convert a cheap smartphone headset to mimic the Oculus/Vive. Even if the price drops to say £250 on either headset, there will be more users but I don't believe it will encourage the masses. You also have a contender, the PSVR ;P

Atm its very hard to find cracked vr stuff that works, cracker teams are just not intersted that much in it since not enough people got a headset. It will change for sure if vr gets more popular but the piracy level is sinkng - denuvo and many internet connection dependend games, multiplayer or not - it will be the same for vr at some point.
I am kidna sure with low vr cost entry level, developers wll earn more money and the industry will start to flourish, it was the same for graphic card depended games, when the price of first 3dfx and riva tnt cards dropped.

Uhm I think I've spotted it now, too.

If a person really has to think twice about buying a Rift eith Touch at just 450eur....then I don't know.

This price destroys the Vive and even I have to admit that this is the WAY better deal. I'm not sure if Im going to buy it now, my gf would not find it funny...Lol. And I forgot that Im planning to get AMD Threadripper.

But it really is a no-brainer. And everybody who still cries about the price @450eur, really has no idea and should just leave. This type of people usually want all the stuff for free. ^^

I should be recieving my Deluxe Audio strap soon, and that alone was around 125eur. If you get the Rift for 450eur then a similar headstrap already comes with the set.

Facebook is now taking the battle on a new level - make a product very cheap and make everybody buy it, let the competition starve.
Now my imagination: Then raise all the prices for the games in the shops to compensate. Lol

And PSVR is utter garbage compared to this deal. Still can't believe it!
