Getting FPS counter to work in Steam VR

I have an HTC Vive Pro. I'm trying to get the FPS counter working in the headset, but no matter what I try, I can't get it to display. I've turned on the FPS counter in the steam setting menu. None of the key presses work. Any help would be hugely appreciated! TIA.
