Any visual difference between 1060 3gb and 6gb?
And by this, I mean, any difference on the physical card themselves. To clarify, I'm thinking of possibly looking into used options for either a 1060 or possibly 580 depending on the price. However they come in 3gb or 6gb and 4gb or 8gb respectively. How can I tell the two different varieties of 1060 (or 580) apart looking through them so that I don't end up paying for a 6gb 1060, only to get ripped off with a 3gb?

the higher the supersampling, the more memory it needs. get a 1070 at least please!

also, i got a used 1080 ti for about 400 dollars the other day for a third computer. they are dirt cheap.

$400 is still a hell of a difference over $150. The whole point is to slap something into a build to limp a little farther and make anything remotely modern even work on it instead of something to take a glorious leap into vr gaming. I suppose I should have said that as well, but I'm just here in the vr section to have a handy play to speak to knowledge people concerning computer building.

a 1070 will be fine. I wouldnt go with less. I have tried my oculus rift on a 1070..it works ok, but my 1080 performs way better.

dont get the 3gb. get the highest ram for the 1060 available.

Again, I need to stress, this isn't for vr. Yes, 1070 is the bare minimum to reccomend for vr, but this isn't for a vr build. Anything higher than a 1060 would get bottlenecked by my aging cheap cpu, which would further add several $100 to the cost. At that point, it would be time to buy an entire new build, but the point I'm trying to get across is that I can not afford an entire new build. This is just about upgrading a single gpu card, and not being screwed over in the process.

Yeah, I know. That's not what I'm trying to ask. What I'm asking is that if a 1060 6gb and a 3gb are lying next to each other on a table, and there is no box nearby, how do you tell them apart? Can you tell which one is a 6gb card just from pictures?

well, I have an amd 940 with4gb onboard memory and it's my living room P.C.H.T.

I run an old 1080 in that one and play all my games fine. Even CPU intense games like fallout 4. how old is your pc?

when I had a gtx970. It stated it had 4gb ram but nvidia sort of hid the truth on that one. it is a 3.5gb video card. I was running that on that amd 940. I can tell you that titanfall 2 ran fine but I was unable to use the full graphical texture it offered. Some games gives you an option to reduce textures used.

Just be aware with 3gb, and new games, some will give the option to reduce texture for lack of memory. You don't need to upgrade a pc.

I built my newphew a cheap 200 dollar system and added a 1070 and he plays ghost recon wildlands just fine.

Some cards with 3GB has only one fan, while the 6GB Version has 2 fans build in.

I doesn't know if this is by every manufacturer the same, but i saw it at a gamescom ago by PNY at the caseking stand.

As it is not for VR, but when for gaming, i need to repeat, that the 3GB version slows down the cores like hell on the card itself! If there is a possibility to get the 6GB version, use it!

Else i would personally not buy any card less, if i couldn't afford it, it is just so contraproduktiv that i would rather wait without playing or buy myself a used PS4 until i could afford a 6GB version or a new computer.

Well, the fact that you're running a amd cpu does give me some hope. I've got a fx 8320, with 8gb ram.

EDIT: My gpu is a nearly ancient r9 280, even a 1060 will give me at least a 50% increase which could potentially translate to up to an extra 30+ frames in some cases, and more importantly, give me a much more comfortable 60 fps to play with on some games.

I am currently running a gen 3 i5 and a 6 gig 1060. I have a great VR experience in all but the most demanding games. The more graphically intense games have to run on lower settings, but unless I'm trying to run a non-VR game through VorpX, I have good luck with the 1060/6gb.

ohh god, Do yourself a favor and get yourself a 1080ti.

My other 2 pc's have a 8320 black edition with 8gb ram and all VR games run fine. The only reason why I updated my 8320 (which is now going to become my living room pc rig when i get a chance) to an intel i7 6700 was because Subnautica is GPU+CPU intense and not very well optimized for VR. I was playing that game at first and it did struggle a bit with high settings. Once I started reaching the deep areas in that game where bigger and strange creatures live, it was a nightmare. Sure it still struggles somewhat with a i7 6700 but it was an eye opener and was a much improved upgrade for that one game.

I am sad to say i have not tried a 8320 and a 1080ti for bethesda games in VR because those are the other 2 games I fear use GPU+CPU. I do have one setup in my other home but im to lazy to drive out there and try. I have that other setup for beat saber when my friends come over.

With that 8320 and a 1080ti, you can play pretty much all VR games. even try a rtx2080ti OC. it will compensate for the lack of CPU.

and truthfully speaking here, all games that are gpu intense is just that, gpu intense. my 1080 ran 99.9% of the vr games excellently on my amd 8320 with the 1080 just as well as it does with my current i7 6700.

I have Asus 1060 6Gig OC card and I have no issues and super sample many things. So hard to advise with Gcards - I mean 1060 is the entry point and then I guess 1080TI to fit perfectly and then its 2080TI for anything like Pimax and going forward (thats also another debate too).

Anyway if you only have the money for a 1060 get the nvidia "OC" 6gig version so its stock overclocked and acts more in the realms of a 1070 but at a 1060 price.

Vram is massively important so never get anything at 3 gig ... 6 and above depending on your pocket.
