SteamVR

Just got my Vive. HDMI port issues. Help please.
So I just got my Vive in the mail and I was setting it up. Got so far as to try and begin the HTC Vive tutorial(with the portal 2 guy). It sat there loading for a bit before I took the goggles off, and it said on my screen that my vive headset and my monitor has to be connected to the same graphics card.

My GTX 980 only has 1 HDMI port, and 3 Displayports(They have a straight 90 degree angle on one side and a 45 degree angle on the other. Pretty sure that's a Displayport?)

I bought a displayport to HDMI adapter. Should it fix my issue if I use this for my gpu?

Also, I kept getting the error 'SteamVR Home unresponsive' on the VR menu in the bottom of the screen. Any suggestions on how to fix that?

A Display port to HDMI adapter works. I use that myself for the monitor and the HDMI port for the Vive.

I also get the "SteamVR Home unresponsive" while SteamVR Home is loading but it disappears when it's finished loading.

Certain brands do not work. I use to see the correct one posted on reddit. The ones that work well. I hope someone can ad more info. Graphics card with 2 hdmi is perfect world. Also, try updating the drivers including the nvidia one.

Do not use adapter for Vive, use it for your monitor.

Vive needs to be connected to the graphics card directly

The Vive overlay claimed that both the monitor and the monitor both need to be plugged in the same GPU together. I tried playing with Vive in the gpu and the monitor in my mobo and it didn't work :c

This would be good, no adapters for Vive.

The best option would be buying a displayport to mini displayport cable and connect Vive with it. Vive ships with a HDMI cable, but it has a mini displayport option too.

Is the mini display port the other plug in the back of the Vive to PC splitter thing? The one with orange plugs in one end and black in the other? I think it has a symbol like | 🞐 | on the back? Is that the minidisplay port?

Orange side is for the HMD. Mini displayport input is on the PC side, the port between USB and HMDI ports. Yes, it's the port with that symbol. Converting displayport to HDMI requires data conversion, while displayport to mini displayport is just a different size connector, so no problems because of that. I have been using a DP-miniDP adapter with a DP-DP cable sometimes and that worked too, though that adds one mechanical connection to the chain.

Just cancelled my amazon order for a displayport to HDMI adapter, and bought a DP to mDP cable(3 feet) instead. Hope the cancellation is not too late and I'll have to pay for both :\ Oh well, something I can through in my spare cables box if I ever plan on building something random

It was an odd choice (or safe) for HTC to include only a HDMI cable in the box and not DP-mDP too, while graphics cards have higher and higher number of more modern DP connectors. They have jumped a step further with Vive Pro though... it doesn't have HDMI anymore, only mDP in its new link box.

I wanted the pro but then I saw it does not come with controllers etc. it only comes with the headset. So I'm gonna have the regular Vive and if I like it enough I'll probably get the pro when the price has gone down and the tech has advanced an extra year or two(these things happen obscenely fast once the technological ball gets rolling)

How long have you had your Vive?

I bought mine from the last summer, when it was on sale. HTC really failed with Vive Pro, let's see what happens with that. It was marketed for consumers, sold with consumer viveport subscription and it doesn't have license for commercial use... but it has price is too high for consumers to upgrage. I would have upgraded for something like $500, but $800 is too much and the whole set (available in next fall) would be something like $1000-$1500. That happnens when there is no competition... I'm now waiting more news about the Pimax's and LG's SteamVR headsets before replacing my Vive. SteamVR tracking is the best available, so my opinion is that the normal Vive is still the best choice for new consumer buyers.

Im sure they will drop the price just like they did on the vive. vive pro is for early adoptors, profesionals, etc. Im a pro! lol yeah right.
