How to change SteamVR Home environment
Hi,

I'm still new to VR (HTC Vive).

My question is, how do I change the room I start in. Currently I'm in this upscale room with top to bottom windows, hardwood floors, and a large balcony. While nice, I would like to try out different different environments.

What I have tried so far:

1) Go to settings
2) Go to Environment and download and pick different environments
3) Choose the new environment by 'clicking' on it
4) Nothing changes

Also, how is the environment different from the Play area (backgrounds), and how do I change between the environment and the play area?

1) Go to settings
2) Go to Background and download and pick different Background
3) Choose the new Background by 'clicking' on it
4) Nothing changes

Sorry for what is obviously a very noobish questions, but I am still learning.

Thanks in advance!

When you are "clicking" it, it doesn't sound as if you are "subscribing" to it. When you are on the description page for the environment or backgrounds, you should notice a "subscribe" button. You have to subcribe to it before it will become available. Then you can choose to visit a room or host your own, I think. You want to host your own. Once you've got it, then you have to save it. And saving it as default is another step.
The difference between background and environment is hard to describe. Play around with them. I usually use a clear disk "environment" so that I can see my "background". If your "environment" is a room, then you will only see your "background" if you have windows.

Good luck! :) There is some neat stuff in there!

I know I am subscribed because it shows up in my environments to choose from. But when I click one to set it, nothing happens. But I didn't know I had to "host" a room in order to be able to "get it" and subsequently save it.

I'm having a similar frustration. Now (on the ENVIRONMENTS page under settings) there is a note that says "If you are using Steam VR Home [which I'm not], you can set Environments there." I can still, outside of Steam VR Home, use different workshopped backgrounds I've subscribed to, but clicking on workshopped environments I subscribed to does nothing at all.

Let me revive this post :)
Can someone help me change default SteamVR environment? (Screenshots would help a lot!)

What I can do right now is to subscribe to an environment from workshop and "Visit" it, but I cannot set it as a default environment when I load SteamVR Home.

It is often referenced that Settings should have an Environments section, but I don't see any. (maybe it was only true for some past version?)

Also, every time I close steam VR and then re-launch it and enter Home environment - all previous changes are reset. Is there a way to preserve them between re-launches?

Thanks! :)
I ended up just turning it off altogether. Seems to help a bit with performance too.

You have to make sure you are in the SteamVR Beta - Follow the instructions here:

https://www.vrheads.com/how-change-environments-steamvr-home

(For clarity you open the menu with the B button not the settings button)
