All current headsets need Win 10 now. It's also the minimum spec requirment for the Rift S.

The Vive (if you can find one..it's now discontinued) will work with win 7 but it's a 4 year old headset and your OS that has no real VR support in it (plus a lot of VR games want Win 10) . The current headsets are much better when it comes to resolution as well .

You really need to upgrade your OS before commiting to a headset.

I think pretty much nothing. They all have win10 as a minimum requirement, so I'm not sure it'll work.

VR on Windows 7 is perfectly viable. Maddog is spreading FUD.

Vive works.
Index works.
Oculus can still work, but isn't a good option.

Windows Mixed Reality is a Windows 10 feature, haven't tried the hardware so I have no idea how dependent it is on Windows 10 specific software.

VR is fairly open in general, Oculus being the biggest exception. Vive and Index will continue to work on Windows 7 for the foreseeable future. In any case, you'll still have the option to install Windows 10 at a later date if necessary.

All headsets work with Windows 7, the Windows 10 minimum requirement is there because W7 is getting old (same goes for games, there isn't one game that doesn't work on W7 currently, but many newer ones have W10 as a req.). Don't listen to anyone telling you to upgrade, Windows 10 is spyware, mostly for the tech illiterate, and for streamers who need to play games like PUBG for money. You're better off getting some works-out-of-the-box Linux distro when you don't want to use W7 anymore, VR is fully supported by Valve there.
