Anybody needing steps: Go to SteamVR in your list, right mouse click -> Uninstall. Tnen reinstall after a restart. All is back to normal since then.
troubleshooting I've tried so far:
- reseated all connections to the headset - no effect
- cleaned headset with compressed air/isopropyl alcohol - no effect
- reinstall steam and steamVr - multiple times, no effect
- uninstall everything Vr related, scour all drivers and remaining data - no effect
- factory reset my headset via holding the home button while powering it up - did a firmware update and had no effect
- downgrade steamVr - no effect
- tried every single spare port on my pc, both USB and Display ports - no effect from any ports, except the headset is not detected on one of my usb ports which is a known broken port.
- hooked up my old Vive headset - worked fine, no issues whatsoever
beginning to think my Index just died, but I'm still in limbo with steam support, 2 days and counting
(I have a Vive that's about 3.5 years old.)
What's interesting is that, when it first turns on, I see my Steam VR Home just fine. It seems to track my headset. Then suddenly, gray screen. And the Steam VR screen says "Searching... Make sure headset can see bases.) FYI, it totally can. I'm stumped for now, but I'll try some things and update if I fix it.
YES YES YES, that is what happening for me as well.
