"Enable Direct Mode" button doesn't do anything
My steamvr used to be completely fine but now it says SteamVR is in Extended Mode. Extended Mode is not recommended. For the best results, please switch to Direct Mode. Giving me an option to Dismiss or Enable Direct Mode, I choose enable. It restarts steamVR and it starts again the exact same way it did before, it says the same thing and gives me the option, it never actually enables direct mode. I need help!

A Guy on Reddit had the very same problem and it turned out to be an oversight in the setup, he pluged the HDMI into the Motherboard and not the GPU.

here is the link to the Reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4og068/enabling_direct_mode/

I'm woundering if you may have done this also?

Try to turn it on in SteamVR options. Check if windows sees your HMD as a second display. That what actually direct mode=off means. If windows sees only one display - just ignore the message. And yes, check that you plugged in your monitor and HMD to the same GPU.

Actually, I've had the same things plugged into the same ports for a long time, and I only have one HDMI port, it should be fine

All monitors(and TV) and Vive should connected to one video card.
If you have not enough HDMI ports - connect your monitors with HDMI-to-DP or HDMI-to-DVI adapters. Connect Vive to HDMI port.

Just an FYI, if you got an asus ROG laptop and use the included hdmi port, you MUST go to the rog gaming center and change optimus to direct mode! It will enable gsync and will actually use the nvidia graphics drivers... I was looking for hours how to fix it! My game was about 20 fps, after changing it feels so much smoother!

My computer forcibly upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Valve Index stopped working... Vive Pro also didn't work... After several hours I found a solution.

Solution:
Delete the steamvr.vrsettings file in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config"
