Night Mode
I greatly appreciate the included night mode, but is there a way I can enable this by default?

I've found myself having difficulty sleeping after playing VR (I'm guessing with the constant bright light of the screens). I usually have f.lux enabled on my desktop to combat this issue, but VR is a different story. I was wondering if night mode was HTC Vive's solution to that issue, or if there was other plugins to dim the blue light coming from the HMD.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, please. Also, I think proper brightness slider would be great. I would really like to be able to set brightness somewhere in between "normal" and "night"

I agree. VR is fun but the health has higher priority.
For start some option auto-schedule would be nice, like use night-mode after 8:00 PM.

Weird, I never had difficulties sleeping after VR.

OP do you actually sleep better after Night Mode? You haven't mentioned that so far.

I guess gaming itself CAN cause sleeping difficulties if you are prone to it. VR or not.
Especially gaming that demands high physical/stressful activity. And thats more extreme on VR obviously!
But thats not only gaming but a lot of things that dont put the brain to rest. (Like a kid that just watched a horror movie cant sleep)

Maybe you shouldn't just quit gaming and enter the bed within minutes but have a longer break.

The mentioned 8pm schedule is a good idea but shouldnt be default of course.
I would still want the true image with good brightness at any time.
I can't make use of the night mode at all, since everything looks wrong. In fact, I usually cant have a monitor bright enough. The brightness is a selling reason to many monitors afterall. I just dim them to increase lifespan.

It's not that I sleep better, but can fall asleep more easily. When I was first playing my Vive, I found myself quitting out and trying to go to sleep for work the next day, but not being able to pass out for about 2 hours. As I mentioned before, I have f.lux installed to help me with this when I'm using a PC at night.

When I found night mode, I started using that and it helped me be able to fall asleep quicker, but since it disables night mode on each launch, I have to remember to go back and do it every time. If there was a way to set it by default, or on a schedule like what was mentioned above, I think that'd work great for me.

I was also curious if there was a program like f.lux, or a way to make something like that for VR, or if Night Mode was the only option I currently had.

Personally, as an IT guy I'm used to looking at darker screens then others and it's much more comfortable for me. Normal mode is just too bright. I really love and appreciate night mode but I think it would be pretty neat if we could set it to stay enabled, and for others if night mode could be automatic based on room light or time or time of sunset or something like that.
How do you guys access the night mode you're all talking about ? I have looking for one since a year now O_o

Steam VR Settings / Night Mode. It's like the first thing in the settings.
Use the gear icon to access the settings from VR.

Can't believe it's been 4 years and they didn't managed to fix this.
I play only in the evening so I have to do this every single day...
Do you have any idea if it is disabled for oculus user ? Because I really can't seem to find it in the option you're telling me about.
Maybe send a screenshot of the place of the option if possible
I saw the option in the internet but it seem they are from an older version of steamvr

Here you go:

I'm using HTC Vive, so maybe Oculus doesn't have support for that.
Also the night mode here is only brightness reduction, no blue light filter (which would be also nice to have).
Yep, it doesn't show, meaning oculus didn't thought about that, guess i'll just use "advanced settings" for steam vr

You can achieve a similar effect to f.lux / Windows night light by manually changing the headset's RGB gain in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config\steamvr.vrsettings

Add "hmdDisplayColorGainR", "hmdDisplayColorGainG", "hmdDisplayColorGainB" under the "steamvr" group of settings.

Value of 1.0 means 100% of that color output, while a value of 0.5 will half the color's output. Values more than 1.0 will increase the intensity of that color.

An example config for 3400k color temperature would be:
(unrelated stuff here) "steamvr" : { (unrelated stuff here) "hmdDisplayColorGainB" : 0.51, "hmdDisplayColorGainG" : 0.76, "hmdDisplayColorGainR" : 1, (unrelated stuff here) } (unrelated stuff here)

You can get other temperature's RGB values by checking the RGB percents of the hex code of your color temperature from this site[www.vendian.org].

Save and restart Steam VR to get the effect.
