Only one HDMI port
Yo, ok so, got a vive. set up took awhile but i finished. got to the link box, all plugs were plugged in. except, i only have one HDMI output. and that was for my monitor. i cant unplug it and put in the vives, because how am i going to choose a game with no monitor. i tried putting in a second graphics card for my monitor to use, and that seemed to work, but the games were "unresponsive" i searched that up and people said that is because the arent from the same graphics card. so how do i get both the monitor and the headsets hdmi port into one. i know about splitters and switches, but what do i need. i just bought a hdmi switch, but i was told that that wouldnt work, is this true. if it is can one of you lovely people just give me a link to a way i could get this thing to work.

If you have a Display Port you can use a Display Port to HDMI adapter for the monitor.

Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable can be used to connect the Vive breakout box.

You can choose games from within the Vive. Just hit the Home button on the controller and the Steam UI should pop up in front of you.

wondering what gfx card you have.... a card capable of vr should have dvi available. If there's no dvi port for the monitor, just get a dvi to hdmi adapter.

This. Even my old 980's had the monitor on DVI and the Vive on hdmi.

As people have mentioned you have multiple options. To be comprehensive lets try to list all of them at once.
  1. Run Vive off of DisplayPort, get DP -> miniDP cable
  2. Run monitor off of DisplayPort, get DP -> HDMI adapter
  3. Run monitor off of DVI, get DVI -> HDMI adapter/cable
Any of these options would solve your problem. Might be possible to run the VR headset using an adapter too, maybe, but I haven't tried that and would rather do straight cables to avoid any odd issues.

I've had mixed and matched monitors so I've been running things like like DP -> HDMI -> DVI in one chain and it has worked fine, at least for a 1080p60 monitor.

Currently I run both the Vive and a new monitor off of DP directly, secondary monitor as DVI -> HDMI (longest cable) and then I have two HDMI unused...

just got a new pc and this has been the most helpful discussion ive seen. i dont have the mini display and only have one hdmi port on the back of my pc, so i guess no vr until i get that second cable.

Then there would already be one screen, and they could use the plug on the back for VR?

Erm, that is a little worrying, pretty much every gpu capable of VR gaming will have more than 1 output.

That sounds like either its a really low end card or that you are using intergrated graphics, neither of which are going to be able powerful to handle vr in the slightest.

What is the gpu?
