Some types of cables have a max length and the signal is not transmitted properly through longer cables. I assume that is your problem. USB 2.0 has a 5m limit iirc.

It could be 5m to the link box and anorher 5m (original Vive cable) for the HMD. So you can modt likely only extend before the link box.
I have long and expensive high quality USB and HMDI cables (Inakustik) and it works flawless.

Active repeaters/converters and such are not recommended since they can add lag to the tracking and or display data.

How was the HDMI connected? The working example had the HDMI connected to the back of the pc (to the graphics card), connecting to the breakout box at the other end. Is that how yours was connected?

yah everything was like the pics 8(. I ordered a diffrent brand a bit shorter hopefully that works. it mihgt be the actual cable thats deffective since i tried just plugging it into my pc asa monitor to a tv and no signal.
I also tried reversing the inputs incase they were mislabeled lol

it could be a power issue, does the headset show up when directly connected to the computer? If not, you might need a powered usb hub.

Read this, I believe your problem will be signal integrity over the extended HDMI cable.
Your solution might be as simple as connecting an adapter, or maybe a high quality HDMI extension, or possibly over such length the HDMI cable has too much loss.
