Direct mode enable or disable??

So before the most recent steam vr update, direct mode seemed to always be on by default.

Now it gives me no indication whether direct mode is on or not, just an enable and disable button. When I click enable it tells me I have to restart steam vr to enable it making it seem like it's off by default.

Can anyone confirm whether it's off or on by default and how to tell.. And also, SHOULD it be turned on at all?? I don't even know what it does. Thanks.

Use the direct mode, without it it extends the desktop to hmd and you don't want that, some games will not even work in extented mode

And how do I tell if it's on or off now? I don't see it on the left of settings anymore it used to say direct mode enabled.

If it is in the extended mode the hmd would show as an extra monitor
