As stated in my post, i found a "temporary fix" by disabling the direct mode and using the extended mode, but the perf are lower.
One of the link you posted spoke about using mini-DP instead of HDMI. My laptop integrates a GTX 1070 and i heard that DP is broken on 1070. Do you think it can work ?
Could it be my GPU over heating ?
Thomas
I received and tried the mini-DP cable & it works fine !!!
No more black screen issue in direct mode !
My problem is SOLVED ;)
Many thanks
I have the exact same laptop but with 16GB ram and have the exact same issue.
I even returned it for repair after reading some reports here that said it prob would be a faulty graphics card. I came back without anything fixed.
It works when running in extended mode but in most titles will go black after a while if run in direct mode. ( The hmd goes black and mirrored games freezes but I can still hear sounds and can close and restart steamVR ) This seem strange to me since this is sold as a VR ready laptop. And the recommendation is to use the HDMI-port.
I will also try the miniDP to HDMI converter-solution. But even if this solves the problem I would like some devs to explain what causes this. So I know if something is broken or not..
I guess this will cause some frustration for buyers of both the the Vive and then a very expensive gaming laptop .. and then just to come home and find it is not working . . at least not as expected
It certainly caused me some.
The miniDp to HDMI converter did not work for me. (maybe the one I used was to cheap or something.)
So I tried one last thing .. a straight miniDP cable from laptop to breakout-box. And viola... everything worked flawlessly since.
I still think this is a issue with the laptop . since the HTC works fine via HDMI on other computers .. but I cannot pinpoint the exact reason .. Would be nice if ASUS could address this .. or at least add this to a knowledge-base for how to use their laptop with one of the major players in VR.. well well over and out.
