Any place to practice combat ?
I'm really struggling with hand-to-hand combat so want to practice. I really don't get how to start a combo or then maintain a kill streak. Previous AC games allow you to practice your combat moves in a training ring at your base. Is there something similar in Black Flag ?

That was in AC 1, the second, Brotherhood and Revelation had a training simulation in your menu using the animus. Not sure if there is one on AC 4, been a while since i play this one.

They're the only other AC games I have !!

I've also only just today found out how to fire my heavy shot cannons - how silly I feel !!

There isn't one in AC4 unfortunately. Not sure why they took that feature out though.

OK. So any help on how you get a combo going ? How to maintain a streak? What to watch for that can stop a streak ? And any counter moves ?

I'm using m/k if that makes it harder/easier !?!?

You can basically "practice" in any mission because there's no penalty for dying, you just restart the mission from the beginning.

The easiest way to start combo is to succesfully counter enemy attact. Then, if you're surrounded, just take a direction of any other normal enemy and Kenway will insta kill them, if they are close enough.
It is easier doing with controller of course, as most of this games are created for the consoles.
As to training - this is prety obvious. You either run through city killing ppl and kiting soldiers or You go on Jackdaw and board other ships.

Simply kill an enemy and you can chain them to other enemies by click+direction towards the next enemy you want to chain and so on. You can kill an enemy by countering with E, then click, to start the combo chain, or you can use your gun to kill an enemy (F is to quickly shoot an enemy when the enemy is highlighted in a white outline).

The big enemies (they have an axe usually and are noticeably larger than the others), if you attempt to chain them, they'll counter you. You also can't add officers to the chain (they have a slightly different stance to normal soldiers and look different from normal soldiers).
Example of an officer (on the left side): http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=728073431

Also watch out for officers with guns, and gun soldiers, they'll be a small notification that they're about to shoot (their icon will have a white crosshair and they'll be a white circle forming over their red indicator). For example:

When they're about to shoot, press space and a direction to use an enemy soldier as a human shield, this helps to maintain your streak.

Just press E to counter soldiers. Pressing E for large enemies will make you dodge them instead, so you'll have to use space and spam left click to kill them.

This is exactly the kind of info I think I'm missing and can't seem to find anywhere (ingame or online). What is a 'finisher' ? Is 'm1' a keyboard combo ?

Taking over ships was a real struggle until I discovered I could use the running assassinate move but that doesn't work when surrounded by enemies. The only other kind of move I really have is kick, kick, stab (space, space,LMB).

This game is great, except hand-to-hand combat.

Finisher is a move/animation that ends in killing enemy. If u see enemy is vulnerable after kicking him, the next attack will kill him. If it happens that means u started a combo and u can kill any normal enemy within reasonable range with one attack. And I also think that this was said earlier...

I have seen animation as I noticed the camera angle usually changes position when that happens. At the moment it only happens rarely so I get a bit panicy and flustered and my fingers just start pressing everythig at that point !!

Someone mentioned a combo is started by countering their move, I can do that (E,LMB), but it doesn't seem to start a combo everytime - should it ?

Are you saying that my kick, kick, stab move should trigger a combo start as I don't normally see any animation with that move ?
