Ive never played a rank 5 game and havent many rank 4 games either tbh.
In fact the only rank 3 tanks i play anymore are the yag-10 and the zis-43.

3.0-3.7 French rocks for me, AMX-13 (FL11) + M10 + ARL44 + CCKW 353 AA.
You have to get used to the AMX's springy suspension and wobbly cannon (with miserable depression), but apart from that it's smooth sailing for me with those.
Normal vehicles have the research penalty in both directions.
Only premiums don't suffer from a downward research penalty.
RP is garbage on a good day, anything but a top performance with a premium account, a premium vehicle, a match win and a game that's at least 10 minutes is trash.
Yepp. War Thunders progression is just stagnation and hinders the game dramaticly.
there's no Elo or SBMM. If anything higher tier stuff is easier to play.
But yes you can just buy a higher tier premium and grind out a whole tree. If you look at the stats it'll say what tiers you can grind without penalty.
