Why are so many of the stat cards full of lies?
I think it's fairly well established by now that the statistics provided by the vehicle preview cards are utterly full of ♥♥♥♥. My question is why?

What does Gajin gain out of lying about the performance of all these vehicles or is this simply a side effect of their general incompetence?

Most of them aren't flat out lies as much as they aren't useful.

For example, top speed for ground vehicles is the maximum on a road (very few of those) on level ground (again, not a lot of that) the vehicle can reach.

Turn time in planes is the time taken for a 180 degree turn without losing speed or altitude, which means it isn't as much a measure of maneuverability as it is a measure of aerodynamics, power to weight and energy retention of that plane.

The armour stats for ground vehicles also tells you nothing about the vehicle.

That and quite a few statcard are for spaded vehicles, not stock ones.

they are really only good for comparing stats, not really useful on their own

I dunno. I'm pretty sure my American T25 can never reach the advertised 50km/h except downhill, even on a road.

It can reach and maintain 50 km/h, but going up even slight inclines seems to ♥♥♥♥ it over because changing from 4th to 5th gear takes long enough that it slows down to the point it downshifts

(edit: Fulda is one of the few maps with long enough straights for testing on)

Mate you're gonna need to throw that thing off of Everest to ever reach that 50km/h

The stat card doesn't lie, it just doesn't show the full picture, with aircraft it doesn't show at which speed they turn the most effectively or when the wings rip off, but that's because it all depends on a more variety of factors, for tanks, the speeds are generally true, provided that the tank can stay in a particular gear, and sit at a constant rate, which in gaijin's map design that's never gonna happen there are tooooooo many little bumps to cause vehicles to lose speed and slight inclines that may screw over groups of tanks like the pre-ww2 french, due to their weak engines and low hp/t or kw/t.
Gaijin also multiple times confirmed that they're balancing and working in consideriation of vehicles being spaded (and probably with aced crew) so I wouldn't be surprised if no vehicles actually reaches the stats on the "stat" card except when you researched everything and upgraded your crew fully and test it in a perfect environment
Er, you all do know that the stat card for a vehicle you have is based on the modules you have installed on it, right?

not if you don't own it, in which case it's reference stats IIRC

I think what a lot of people don't realize is that these stat cards are when a vehicle is under very specific/optimal circumstances, >not< necessarily "real-game" scenarios.

To call them an intentional lie and suggesting Gaijin has something to gain from lying I think is missing the mark- Instead I think it would be more accurate to say something along the lines of "Not applicable to many in-game situations".

I have been wondering about better ways to represent a vehicles capabilities that could be accessed on the Wiki, however have not found any good solutions, yet.
The vehicle stat card isn't what should be complained about when talking about in-game performance. The shell info cards across basically every single tank in the game don't match up with what the round can actually do, it's as if they only input the information once and never looked at them again. One of the most annoying things to me when I first started playing was looking at a tank in the hangar armor view and reading the effective thickness only to find out that the value you see doesn't mean much when comparing it to shell penetration.
