Distance listens for inputs on all detected devices simultaneously (everything in the Devices dropdown of the Controls menu in-game). If you want to set up binds on two different devices, you have to select the device you want to set binds for, and hit Edit Scheme for that device. Each device has its own separate control scheme bindings - you can't bind a controller button in a keyboard scheme, and you can't bind a keyboard button in a controller scheme, but you can have both device's schemes configured and enabled (any device that isn't specifically set to the "Disabled" scheme).
It may be the case that those extra buttons on your controller are being detected as a completely separate device, so have a look at the Devices dropdown, and if you see anything else listed other than just the controller and keyboard, then try selecting that "third" device, and setting binds on the scheme for it. Alternatively, you can do what you tried before, binding those buttons to keyboard inputs, and then edit the keyboard scheme for those binds.
Also bind "break" to pulling the stick back - it isn't ACTUALLY break but reverse with "gas" being forward.
