Controller buttons don't work at all - game doesn't register them as being pressed.
Initially, I was using x360ce (32-bit) to emulate a 360 controller as 99% of the time games have 360 support built in. However that wasn't working - the game wouldn't recognise the emulated 360 controller, and instead would just list my "twin USB joystick" controller - which is a PS2 controller attached with a USB dongle.

When in this state, I could use the analogue sticks to map controls and navigate menus, but the game wouldn't register any button presses, and I couldn't map buttons.

So I thought maybe it was x360ce somehow "taking over" the button input but not the stick input. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled to get rid of any remaining x360ce files and restarted, but still no button presses are being recognised.

I may have been setting up x360ce incorrectly, in which case does anyone know the correct settings? Otherwise, any help would be appreciated. I haven't gotten past the main menu as I don't want to play with a M+K!

Distance's controls system looks specifically for hardware, so any kind of emulation or virtual controller nonsense with stuff like vjoy, joy2key, etc. is likely going to be messed up. That said, I just tested and was able to get a Gamecube controller detected using a Mayflash adapter[www.amazon.com] I had lying around. No extra software required and it was listed in the in-game devices drop-down menu in the Controls options as just a gamepad. It's probably going to be dependent on what kind of adapter you're using, some are going to work better than others. I've never heard of anyone using a PS2 controller with Distance before though, so you might have to do a lot of testing with various stuff in order to get it to work. Distance does have native PS3 and PS4 controller support without the need of any 360pad emulation.

Are the buttons normally recognized without any extra emulation or virtual controller software? You can use this to test: https://gamepadviewer.com/

x360ce finds the controller, but it's not listed in the "sound, video, and game controllers" section of device manager. That site you sent me does not recognise it.

But yes, the controller is recognised in-game, however none of the buttons work, only the sticks...

Does it work in other games? Because it sounds to me like an adapter issue, especially if it isn't appearing on the site I linked or in your device manager.

I would give joy2key a shot if you can't get your game to properly utilize the controller.

Californ1a, I've just always used x360ce for it so I'm not sure if it's ever worked anywhere else. However it IS in the "devices and printers" section of control panel, and when I go into the game controllers screen and click properties this screen comes up: http://imgur.com/6Uop1Da
and all buttons and axes work just fine.

Interestingly, I also have a Logitech F310 (I much prefer the PS2 controller however because of the shape) that WAS being detected by lots of other games, however now that I've just tried it in those games again, it seems to be not detected now...

I'm going to restart my computer and see if that fixes anything.

Post restart: F310 not detected at all in game (not in drop down list), the PS2 controller is still detected, and still not registering button input. This is with no x360ce. Not sure what's up with the F310 as nothing is happening with it at all, it's in "devices and printers" but it doesn't appear in any games...

OK so I have also just tried using the Logitech profiler, which is the "driver" for the F310.

Using the gamepad in DirectInput mode, mapping all the controls and launching distance from the application caused the same problem as the PS2 controller - the analogue sticks worked, and the buttons didn't! I also tried closing the profiler and launching distance again, same result.

When I try to use the gamepad on XInput mode, the game does not detect the controller at all.

I'm really confused at this point.

This is very strange. It definitely sounds like there's some software intercepting your button presses before attempting to send them to the game, but as I said, Distance looks specifically for the hardware, so any software interception stuff is likely not going to work.
