Firebug is meant to be a distraction and holdout perk, making zeds slow down and leaving them to panic, which gives enough time to finish them off, especially that Firebug can hit multiple enemies at the same time
I don't main Firebug, but i do like making Zeds suffer while their blood boil and innards being cooked from inside
A firebugs primary objective is to burn down low to mid tier zeds and quickly secure
ways out for the team to retreat.
When you play as a firebug, leave the big zeds to a demo/sharpshooter or any other that possess high firepower.
Ground fire(arguably more useful than Barbecue) does unintentionally lights up the bigger zeds too most of the time.
I've found Firebug with heatwave and ground fire combos great with demos. Firebug using heatwave (massively under-rated perk. it's basically soft god-mode) and microwave gun alt fire to push big zeds back and act as a wall while demos throw rockets. If you want to help with big zeds as a firebug, try this and make sure you have no SS or Slingers.

Play whatever you like. 90% of the people who play this game play it very frequently and tolerate very little in mistakes, and that kind of mentality deserves no recognition. If you're playing Firebug in HoE with a server full of level 25s, it'd come as no surprise if they kicked you because you were doing exactly what you were supposed to do. They're all tryhard asswipes.
A clip or two of the Microwave gun is usually enough to kill a Scrake, and if people are spamming damage into a Fleshpound while the Firebug microwaves it they'll usually kill. But when Sharpshooter can one-shot headshot a Skrake with the aimbotless Railgun (or two shot with the aimbot enabled) and the Demolitionist can shoot 3 Rockets at a Fleshpound to kill him, there isn't much need for the Firebug to blow his ammo load.

Even if we get the brand new (old) Husk cannon to make its way in, we're still stuck with one of the most iconic, creative weapons that came from killing floor 1 (the flareguns) being incredibly weak and not really worth using in any situation.
Most firebugs hold down LMB, spamming their ♥♥♥♥ everywhere and directly angering Scrakes / Fleshpounders when the team isn't ready. This is not how you play the class but most seem to do this, sadly.
Fire makes things panic. If things panic, they flail around and make headshots impossible. All the other perks more or less depend on headshots.
