The Obersoldaten backed up by Anti-Tank capping and laying traps seemed quite a nice tactic and this was able to lock down one point for a long time.
You can see it in this game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN-FyRrXeAA About Rank 60 vs Rank 70 player
The Stuka zu Fuß also seemed very useful for its barrage ability against Anti-tank weapons and high damage in general. So it seems Mechanized Regiment offers the most useful 3 units, I have to agree with you.
Smoke from the Medic Truck mortar is of course useful. However, with doctrines you can use smoke from Airplanes and the puma does have (although unreliable) smoke options aswell.
I wanted to use more medic truck for healing purposes but I have since learned that you can click with 1 infantry group on the healing package and heal all units around it (so multiple infrantry squads). This allowed me to have much better unit preservation and I do not rely on the medic truck anymore.
The Med truck you can always place later and still get some use out of its unit selection and healing, while the Mech truck will only provide you with Stuckas, some extra repairs and maybe a Puma to sacrifice on hunting rocket artillery. But the Luchs and Puma will not have the same impact as in the midgame.
Med first has its uses against Brits though since the ISG counters their more stationary style well, shuts down emplacemenets completely should you ever encounter any and the AEC does limit your Luchs/Puma play a bit more than other lights.
Get the Flak track if at all for some map control and unit suppression; but it's generally a better idea to go for schewerer panzer and get authorization for early pz IV
Your panzerfusiliers have AT grenades without techign so that's nice too
If you want to go for the units inside though... Play on 3v3 or 4v4. Get an IR HT and spam artillery with fortifications doctrine, PaK 43 Works wonders with unlimited object penetration too
