Hey.
If I as a German translate " Obersoldat " to English it would mean " Oversoldier " that doesn't make much sense. Obersoldat in this context means they are soldier of a high command or a high leading position kind of experienced veterans with a higher troops rank like sergeants. In my time serving in the German army I never heard the word " Obersoldat " I know the rank, Obergefreiter which is a corporal.
So I think, that the " Obersoldaten " in Company of Heroes are probably exactly what I just told you, if I look at the uniforms though, they wear " Erbsentarn " - pee camouflage. Which was only worn by the SS. Obersoldaten are probably some kind of SS troops.
Hope I could help, please don't take the German words used in Company of Heroes 2 too serious, there are many mistakes and the German what is sometimes spoken by the soldiers isn't spoken by real Germans at all, which I think is a bit lazy, they could have paid some random German male 20 dollars he would have synchronized it correct. The German soldier in Company of Heroes 2 have a Polish and sometimes some kind of French accent. Maybe they are from Toronto Canada or so, I don't know. But it's not spoken very well.
I hope I could help you at least a bit. Have fun.
Depends from how you take it. Fact is, the term " Obersoldat " never existed. They are as you said, SS troops.
It literally means Veterans, which had access to better weapon and were combat-hardened
Actually no, I am German and my grandfathers served in the Wehrmacht. Nobody said Obersoldat to a veteran. A veteran was a veteran or sometimes as nickname called " Alter Hund " and " Frontschwein ". As I said in my previous comments, the term Obersoldat didn't exist. It isn't a rank and it isn't a used word in any form in the Wehrmacht. The word " Obersoldat " is made by Relic.
true, obersoldat sounds cheesy, like it would fit better in a wolfenstein than a more or less serious game.
