Obersoldaten
Hi everyone! I am a OKW player and out of all the units I have to say that the Strum Tiger and the Obersoldaten squad are my favorite; howerver, unlike how it is so easy to find a bio for the deadly tank, I cant anything about the Obersoldaten. Is this just a made up kill unit, or actual bad asses during the war? It feels like I searched every where, but nothing...

Because they are made up. They are basically supposed to be SS troops.

It just means veteran soldiers or high ranking nco's, it was not a real unit in the german army just like knight cross holders in coh1.
Pak0tac Jan 9, 2015 @ 1:05pm
because relic are nazis and they wanted to make the nazis in coh OP, they were forced to invent new units, obersoldaten is one of them.
i bet if they could they would of added nazi giant mech warriors and flying carriers and orbital laser cannons

why dont we have a 50$ commader where you summon hitler that shoots nukes out of his ass?

They are based on Waffen SS soldiers. Just like Panzergrenadiers.
Take this picture for reference http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/38/2f/55/382f556b1f368416a37755cbc733a16a.jpg

in german obersoldaten sounds really cheesy, literally over-soldiers.obergrenadier was a real rank, but the name obersoldaten better reflect the power of them i think.

Hey.

If I as a German translate " Obersoldat " to English it would mean " Oversoldier " that doesn't make much sense. Obersoldat in this context means they are soldier of a high command or a high leading position kind of experienced veterans with a higher troops rank like sergeants. In my time serving in the German army I never heard the word " Obersoldat " I know the rank, Obergefreiter which is a corporal.

So I think, that the " Obersoldaten " in Company of Heroes are probably exactly what I just told you, if I look at the uniforms though, they wear " Erbsentarn " - pee camouflage. Which was only worn by the SS. Obersoldaten are probably some kind of SS troops.

Hope I could help, please don't take the German words used in Company of Heroes 2 too serious, there are many mistakes and the German what is sometimes spoken by the soldiers isn't spoken by real Germans at all, which I think is a bit lazy, they could have paid some random German male 20 dollars he would have synchronized it correct. The German soldier in Company of Heroes 2 have a Polish and sometimes some kind of French accent. Maybe they are from Toronto Canada or so, I don't know. But it's not spoken very well.

I hope I could help you at least a bit. Have fun.

I don't think they were real, Relic just wanted to make sure even complete ret ards could have a chance in this game

It wasn't a rank, it was a generic term for senior privates. IIRC the mod builder refers to them under the hood as 'waffen' honor guard. The superficial name is so you can pretend they aren't nazi political troops.

In the game files they are mentioned as "honor guards" - pretty sure these guys are waffen ss and op ^^

Depends from how you take it. Fact is, the term " Obersoldat " never existed. They are as you said, SS troops.

Obersoldaten is not a phrase which was officially used like Grens or Panzerfuesilier in Wehrmacht or SS during WW2.
It literally means Veterans, which had access to better weapon and were combat-hardened

Actually no, I am German and my grandfathers served in the Wehrmacht. Nobody said Obersoldat to a veteran. A veteran was a veteran or sometimes as nickname called " Alter Hund " and " Frontschwein ". As I said in my previous comments, the term Obersoldat didn't exist. It isn't a rank and it isn't a used word in any form in the Wehrmacht. The word " Obersoldat " is made by Relic.

true, obersoldat sounds cheesy, like it would fit better in a wolfenstein than a more or less serious game.
