How good is the solo campaign?
Is this game good enough to buy solely based on single player?

Bonus question: is this a good game to get into multiplayer RTS? Ive only played one RTS online, Age of Empires 2, i got my ass handed to me constantly.

SP: like most SP games, not really. There really isn't anything appealing in RTS SP games IMO.
MP: Addictive, but broken. It's sort of like crack.

solo campaign of original COH was better, havent been too inspired to finish coh2 campaign, but thats becasue i have friends who play multiplayer vs AI for which you will always get a game within a minute or so.

The SP campaing is quite good - you will see quite a lot of action "Enemy at the gate" style. As the camaping progress it gets quite good.

The Theater of War is also really really good. I enjoyed every part of it so that will be quite nice for you.

However in the campaing and the War Theater - the game is more of a squad managment then full blown strategy game. Its all about tactics and micromanagment.

The multiplayer is as addictive as you can possible wish. Again its not much like Age of Emipres - here a losse of a single squad can be quite bad setback. Like in normal RTS you will have to manage your resorces quite good to win - but even more important - you will have to keep your units alive, get them exp to lvl up. Unlike normal RTS here you dont just produce huge number of units and trow them at the grinder due to good macro of resorse income.

Watch a game of 2v2 or 4v4 in youtube to get what i mean.

First question, No, don't buy this game for single player. If you want a really good single player campaign try Warhammer 40k2. That's the best I know of at least. The campaigns provided here and in the base game may be comparable to AOE2s campaign. Although somewhat simpler in terms opf winning the scenario, 90% of missions in the original campaign you just move forward and kill the non-respawning enemy units to win. The strategy comes from how you manage that. As far as how you achieve that, well... it's fairly easy. You can experiment but not even the toughest difficulty will provide a challenge once you know your basics. You can get medals for going above and beyond, these are rarely very difficult however. Also this game is probably less historically accurate than AOE2, if you like that then the fact that the germans get way more powerful than the russians or americans will constantly bug you.

Second question. Probably not. I've never played AOE2 multiplayer but you'll get tons of whiners on this game because they don't really understand the mechanics. I think a few things could be better, but it is balanced. Anyone who disagrees with me can start a thread. Note that this game is odd in that different factions become more or less viable as the game goes on. I don't say powerful because both sides should gain power as the game goes on, The german factions just increase faster and reach a greater power than the soviets or americans. Also I haven't played as either of the newer factions, the OKW or the Americans, but the soviets have significantly worse Anti-tank abilities and tanks than either of the german factions. They get by due to the fact their faction has the lowest upkeep costs of any faction.

trash, I didn't like it at all, captured the soviet union dring WW2 but thats what I hate about it. Sometimes you even have to leave your men to die which kills me inside :,(

I've just finished it today. It's very good, but it could be harder. But it's difficult enough if you like to hunt achievement. They will always force you to play it without using the OP units or not doing things that would otherwide make your progress easier. Story is good, but they maybe overdid it with portraying russians as the worst humans in the world, no matter what they were doing. But overall I had a lot of fun. Relic always knew how to make a good SP campaigns. Can't wait for next one. It should be something like Chaos Rising for DoW2.
