Multiplayer questions for new COH 2 player
Hi All,

I'm new to COH 2 and have just recently been able to beat the AI on hard without too much difficulty. I did this after going through the entire Soviet compaign.

I would like to play the online multiplayer but I had a few questions:

1. Should I get comfortable beating the AI on "expert" level before I join multiplayer games or is being good at beating the AI on "hard" good enough?
2. Do you recommend I get experience with the AI on any specific maps before joining multiplayer games (so far I've only played the Leningrad 1v1 map).
3. I don't have a full grasp of how to use the commanders for strategy yet but I was wondering how common it is for players online to change their commander depending on the faction they play against or is more based on the opponents play style (or both)?
4. Do you recommend I purchase an extension and play third faction or is knowing how to play Ostheer army and the Soviet army enough?
5. Does playing one faction over another in multiplayer or looking for a game with a specific map size (i.e. 1v1, 2v2, etc) get you faster games? Wasn't sure if it's easy to find online multiplayer games any time of the day and if certain criteria help to find one faster.
6. Is more of the community playing stanard games or mod games?
7. What is the most played faction in online games and what is the least played faction?
8. This is not related to multiplayer but do all people that purchase the COH 2 base game (or the extensions) all get the same exact commanders? I notice I have a commander marked as "rare" but I don't know what this means practically and couldn't find any info on this...does it mean only like 1% of COH 2 players have this commander? 30%? Does it make the commander any better then the "common" commanders?

Thanks all and sorry if these are real newb questions, I searched quite a bit and couldn't find clear answers on this, and when I found a couple of links, they didn't work. I just don't want to start playing online multiplayer games just to have people getting upset and telling me to uninstall the game ;)

Thanks!

1. Maybe, depends on who you wind up playing. I've read that the AI actually cheats at higher dificulties (wouldn't surprise me), and AI never plays quite teh same as humans (less intelligent, infinitely better micro/being 5 places at once) in any RTS.
3. Commanders are a pick-once-per-match thing, so you take 3 into battle and pick one at some point in time. Depending on what faction & what you have availble, they can either provide some good utility, feel OP, or be compeltely useless... so get used to figuring out what factions youre against and what your commanders can do to them.
4. Play around first, I find it's a lot less frustrating having bought all the factions simply because I know what the hell I'm fighting and how they work. Relic definitly shouldn't be charging for completely different factions the way they are, especially in an asymmetric game, but eh...
8. Pretty sure the commanders you have you can use in any single or multiplayer game loadout. 3 commanders, 3 intel, and whatever aesthetic crap in every game mode.
Thanks Shakajolt for taking the time to help me, I'll see if others can tackle the other questions and if not maybe will split a few into seperate threads....

3. You can NOT change commanders once the match starts. Pick 3 before match begins
4. Play Soviet and Wehrmacht first (preferably 2vs2). To know their strength and weaknesses better in team plays
8. "Rare" or "Uncommon" commanders usually are not better than "common" ones. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. They provide additional unit types though. You can get them by buying with real money or waiting to drop from war spoils after match.

Uh,this is tricky.
1 nah. You're better than 30~% of players right now,go ahead.
2 no need for that.
3 both, try to play as much commanders as possible ,even buy some if you like the look of the cmd if you have spare cash.
4 you don't "have to" buy one,but playing as them do make you understand more about your allies/enemies.
5 there are more players playing 4v4, but quality of those people...
6 the difference isn't too big so....(numbers I mean)
7 In my opinion, OKW being the most and USF the least.
8 at the start no,you get those standerds (arguably bests ) and two rare when an event long time ago,it's possible to get new ones via war spoil though.

If you're planning on going into 4v4s, bring friends. I don't even team up with randoms in this game. The community is sometimes terrible. Even if your friends have never played the game before losing with them will probably be more fun then listening to some guy whining while winning and at the same time your friends can get a better understanding of the game. That's how I play 4v4. We'll lose a lot, but if something goes wrong at least you can explain what happened.
Thank all really appreciate it and it's great people take the time to help new players here. This really filled in some blanks for me! I wish I could contribute a few bucks to a COH 2 tournament prize win as a thanks ;)

Two follow up newb questions - someone in another post had mentioned that some people play factions (Axis?) so that they can enter an online game faster in the que - is this true and if so, does this have something to do with the system preferring to match allies vs axis or vice versa?

Second - are there ever times of the day when you find nobody to play a multiplayer game online with?

For automatch it only searches Axis vs. Allies so, it depends on how many people are planning on playing a faction that belongs to one of the groups. It generally switches back and forth. The UKF faction was added recently so there is a shorter wait if you play Axis since most people are trying the new faction. In custom matches you can play mirror matches like Allies vs. Allies or vice versa.

I generally find games throughout the day and there isn't usually a long wait time.

1. Yes and No. AI and Human are complete different. If you're are not familiar with with gamegameplay. Expert AI are good at harassing you. They Macromanage things like strategist! but they totally lacks Micromanagement which most of the time leave their units die whenever retreat is possible.
2. Yes, but if you read map fast enough you can do it without knowing the map.
3. Commanders Slightly changes your play style. It only give you ability assistance if when used correctly. can turn tide of the game.
4. Unfortunately no. Blame Sega for that. Not a P2W situation but I never think it is worth it. Wait for sale.
5. Unfotunately yes, when there is some aspect of the game that is somewhat easily used and make victory easier. people tend to hog up to that faction. E.g. Flame nades and ISG now. And the more you check and unveto. the more chance you get in.
6. Look at "Public game list" There are some popular mod like AoD and All Units mod.
7. Depends on situation. Soviet and US forces is less played because of new British forces.
8. "Rare commanders" means it is bought or got from special event. And No they are not game changer or P2W situation. And if you're very lucky you'll get one from drop as same as Normal commander or Uncommon commanders.

I hope this helps.

also be prepared the matchmaking test your abilities first so you will be matched with much stronger opponents for the first 10 games. Dont be frustrated by the first performance ;)
