They're like guards, decent against Stug and Ostwind can't be upgraded with Brens though but still decent.
That the commander also features a halftrack that not only reinforces but slows dropping Piats without researching the racks, is a huge plus: stick a few regular squads with your tank hunters and equip them with Piats or Vickers to add some further firepower as you deem fit. The halftrack provides on-site reinforcement as well as transport as you can roam around the map without fear of needing to run back to base and giving ground.
