Also those "tanks" are most likely just Luchs and Pumas, which are OKW light tanks. Something the AI tends to build all game despite those units being midgame vehicles, that shouldn't be spammed.
If you are having issues with Standard AI, you should pay more attention to the basics. AI is a pushover when you position your units well and keep them alive. It barely knows how to use cover. Most definitly has no idea how and when to stay in cover. Doesn't properly position weapon teams in advance. And overall keeps units exposed and vulnerable far too long.
Use AI allies at the same level as the opponent. I do this with a friend, we "hold the bridge" long enough for the AI to arrive, after that it's a piece of cake.
As you said, the AI will drain resources on heavies and lots of infantry, but your allies will arrive in time to drive them back, using this short window.
The thing about A.I, is that it does cheat, but I find that it does it greatly on Expert.
As to the A.I getting medium and Heavy tanks out early, that depends on capturing the fuel. A.I can't built those tanks if you hold both fuel points, of course they can bring out those command tanks and Stugs as part of their command doctrine. I and friend play hard and expert A.I, a lot, we see Expert cheat greatly when it comes to mass troops and light vehicles, thus we make it a task to get those fuel point as quick as possible.
I also know that A.I and it's grenade throwing is like crazy accurate, a single throw by grens and assault troops will wipe out squads in a single hit, if I was to throw grenades like that, I'd be lucky to cut maybe 80% of the A.I squad. Don't get me started on mortar teams the A.I uses, Expert mainly, the A.I spams mortar teams as Germans and their accuracy is spot on, taking out mg buildings and nest with ease, you have to get those mgs out fast or be wiped.
So needless to say I don't really see your problem.
