At a cost of 9 pop it would seem wiser lategame wise to have an LMG if your objective is to slow down enemy infantry, something that your vet 3-4 volks squads can already do
Maybe the vet 4 ability is super useful, but I'd rather those 9 pop went to a flak half track (Since allies love airstrike spam so much) or a Stuka for 3 additional pop, for blob destroying
The smoke screen for vehicle disabling seems too situational, if irc It's radius isn't that big
Compared to panzer fusiliers (Which you can call-in at the start of game now, and can be equipped with G43s/Panzershrecks) they seem to fall short
Like evilnick8 said, they roll out when tanks and artillery are rolled out. Not much use then.
all in all I'm not convinced
they are however kind of a solidify your lead unit, you need to be comfortable with AT and not be struggling on the field to have the mp there to spend on them and not a tank or some AT
They are incredibly powerfull vs inf. They are your way of dealing with better scaling allied infantry.
Though ofc if it's a 4v4 that devolves into artillery spam they're not going to be useful.
Obers are alot better than either of those 2 at longer range. If you got alot of PF you mostly not need them but in the case of falls I personally find obers to just be a better unit.
Many a time I've seen all four go pop to a pair of scotts or a pack howie.
Their 4- man squad size means that you have to screen them with 3 volks or so, depending on how many you have on the field. Just move the volks up the front to soak the damage, while the Obers unload their weapons; you will also scare away light and medium vehicles with panzerfausts, vehicles that would normally seriously threaten your Obers.
They also have some nice abilities: a bundled grenade for wiping clumped squads or clearing buildings, boobytraps on points to seriously hurt any enemy squad trying to capture a point(or backcappers/ partisans) and a better smoke grenade that slows and hurts infantry(only slows vehicles somewhat).
Just babysit them properly or find them a safe garrison and they will put the pressure on enemy infantry.
They wipe Obers in between vodka chugs.
Obers win against them at long range on even vet
The point that guards hit field (and start vetting) long before Obers completely aside.
At long range the battle is close but obers can win.
Sure if airborne guards are higher vet they win, but they are also a doctrinal unit. The new Soviet commander is really centred around strong infantry.
