Age of Empires II HD The Conquerors Expansion has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Hi guys,

I downloaded this game yesterday and I can't get the game to load up. I click play on steam and it launches the loader, but when I press play on the loader it gives me the following generic error message:

"Age of Empires II HD The Conquerors Expansion has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

Any idea on how to fix this problem? I've spent hours looking for fixes and tried everything and nothing seems to work, including the renaming of the launcher and the "nostartup" command. I'm running the game on XP Service Pack 3 (32bit) and my system meets the reqs for the game. My drivers are all up to date aswell.

Any help would be much appreciated!
