How do you disable unit upgrades in the scenario editor?
I am having trouble with the scenario editor. Suppose I'm making a scenario and I want to disable the pikeman unit (the upgraded spearman). If I add "pikeman" to the player's disabled list (under "options" in the editor), I am still able to research "upgrade to pikeman" and build pikemen when I play the scenario. I can successfully disable un-upgraded base units, such as spearmen or militia, but I cannot disable any of the succeeding upgrades to them, such as pikemen or men-at-arms.

What I want is to make a scenario where I could build, say, militia and men-at-arms, but not longswordsmen, two-handed swordsmen, or champions. So far as I can tell, unit upgrades are not among the techs that are available for disabling in the options menu. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Many thanks.

That first paragraph made my brain hurt :/

I haven't done the map editor in this version but in the original game I thought you could disable the tech and it would do so. I guess not in this one.

Sorry about that. Much of the info was superfluous so I edited it out.

In the Scenario Editor, you can disable units and technologies independently. You must disable the Pikeman tech itself, not just the Pikeman unit.

You cannot disable the Pikeman tech. Same goes for every other unit-line upgrade.

What you can do though is disabling the unit in the options section and simply research the upgrade 'Pikeman' in a trigger. That way you cannot train the pikeman, but you also can't research the pikeman because it's already been done.

Unfortunately, that solution does not work. Like I said, disabling pikemen in the options menu does nothing, I can still build pikemen. If I trigger the pikemen research, it simply means that my spearmen are upgraded to pikemen from the get-go, and I cannot build spearmen, only pikemen (again, even if pikemen are disabled). I don't want to research the pikeman upgrade at all, I want to be limited to spearmen.

It's sounding like this is actually impossible, which seems silly to me, as I don't think it's such an unusual thing to want to include in a scenario. It's just disabling a unit upgrade, nothing fancy. But evidently it's too much to ask.

Aww I'm silly.. well I've just found out you can disable unit-line upgrades in the AOK Trigger Studio! It's very useful for many things, I'd advise you to get it. You can disable the Pikeman tech there, that should do the trick. Of course you need to be Castle Age at max or the Pikeman will already be available.

It worked! I downloaded AoKTS and disabled the techs. Things are the way I want them now. Thanks for the help sourc0r, you seem very knowledgeable.

Here's another question for you, if you have the time. Can AoKTS be used to increase the population limit in scenarios beyond 200? The reason I'd like to do this is that the Workshop mod for infinite population replaces the same file as another mod I like, the "dead units stay forever" mod. It would be cool if there were a way to increase the pop. limit on a custom scenario beyond 200 (even just to 500) while also using the dead units mod. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for your time!

The AoE2 Editor is just a mess. And I'm baffled that they didn't even rework it for the 30 Euro expensive new crap version of the game.
Multiplayer still has a bad performance, Map Editor is horribly trashy, no rework on the unit models for the different civs (There are nordic and arabic swordsmen but only for the editor and campaigns....).

But hey! New shiny water textures! Awesome!

As for the unit limit I thought AOKTS could do that as well.
At least the unofficial version for The Forgotten can do it I think.
