[Linux+Wine] Works!
Only a few minor tweaks you need to do to make it work, this is assuming you have steam running through wine already.

1. Install game
2. cd to "drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Age2HD/"
3. Rename the "Launcher.exe" to "Launcher.bak" and "AoK HD.exe" to "Launcher.exe"
4. Inside of steam, add "-nostartup" to the launch options.
5. If your cpu automatically downclocks, disable that. For me, it was "sudo cpupower frequency-set -g performance"
6. Run the game, note that it will take several minutes to start up as the VS2012 redistributal and the directx fail to install, but it will run.

Guys, I've just had the best experience playing this game so far! Everything worked perfect. I just installed Windows 10 and started using it, now this game works like a charm! I hope it helps someone.

The latest PlayOnLinux installer seems to work great. All I had to do was rename the launcher and disable the Steam overlay.
The only issue I am having is that the in game text entry boxes do not show the text I have typed (it flashes on for a split second every time I enter a character, but then goes to black). I can still send the text just fine so it doesn't really hurt much. Anyone else seen this?

#110 Yes. I read somewhere that to fix it you need to download fonts common to windows. I tried once with the recommended fonts, but it didn't work. In retrospect, I think I should have tried to find a way to install them in wine perhaps.

For those with the alt+tab bug, there is a workaround patch (by Raditz12): https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=52463

I have installed AoE in Steam in Wine. WHen I clicked on play, the small window appeared and installed DirectX, but then game did not start. WHen I click on Play again, the small window appears again saying something like "preparing to start", but it disapeares quicky and nothing happens.

What can I try to make it work? The original solution is from 2013. so...

Specs:

HP G5 255 (laptop)
15,6 inch 1080p display
AMD A6-7310 APU with AMD Radeon R4 Graphics × 4 (1 GB allocated to iGPU)

12 GB DDR3L 1600 MHz (4 + 8 GB)
Ubuntu 17.04 64-bit
Wine 2.0.2

Most of the OP is still valid. Just replace "-nostartup" by "SKIPINTRO".

I also tried it with Play on Linux. Same thing.

Thank you so much for this, worked a treat :) Running current wine-staging build, all I had to do was steps 1,2, install vcredist, then 6. You are my linux hero for the evening.

PlayOnLinux worked for me with two fixes:
* rename "AoK HD.exe" to "launcher.exe" from Steam's "Browse Local Files" (without this it won't start at all, as described in #112)
* change the PlayOnLinux config for AoE to use Wine 3.8 (with the default 1.21-Staging or whatever it is, multiplayer won't work; it times out trying to join a network game)

That worked for me on Ubuntu 18 / Thinkpad X1 Carbon, and also on a MBP running Sierra with PlayOnMac. I did not need to install fonts (PlayOnLinux downloaded Windows fonts for me) or add startup args or anything.
