I've tried the thing to download an older version of MS visual C++ 2015, but that doesn't seem to work.
I'm also looking for a solution.
FYI - I have a Radeon graphics card and I'm running windows 10.
My system specs, Dual-Core 3GHz, 4GB, 250GB, Windows 10, Integrated Graphics. All up-to-date.
Any help?
I had the same problem, but I finally got it solved. I had to first make sure I had the latest updates for windows 7 pro. Then I made sure I had Service Pack 1 installed. Finally I discovered that my video card driver was not installed after running the driver installation from the cd. I had a standard display adapter in my device manager. I updated the video card driver from the device manager and windows finally detected my installed video card (Radeon RX 480). I rebooted my system one more time just in case and to my surprise I was finally able to launch into AoE. Hope this post helps and Good Luck !!
I think my virus protection removed them for some reason. Good luck!
I browsed the local files for AOE2, opened the "redist" folder, and ran the DirectX 9 installer.
I still got the same error so I ran all the Microsoft VCRedist installers that were in there as well.
Problem solved.
(You may have to restart after you finish running all the Visual C installers.)
To fix this, I changed the default graphics processor to integrated graphics - not the graphics card you own. The game should run fine.
For those who does not trust the link, here is a little explaination : Download directx control panel on MajorGeek. Open the folder and run directx.cpl in administrator. Go to Direct3D : Allow Hardware Acceleration. Go to DirectDraw : Use Hardware Acceleration. Apply the changes then run the game. If you see "Validating Subscriptions" Click on the one with the word : "Workshop" then Ctrl+C. Press the "ok" button. The game should start. (worked for me)
Thank you. How do you change the default graphics processor like that? For those of us who aren't great with computers :P Thanks!
Are you sure your problem wasn't "Failed to initialize draw system : main.cpp(369)" instead of "Failed to initialize draw system : main.cpp(312)"
It seems as though they are two completely different problems with completely different solutions... the 369 error is an easy fix but I can't find how to fix the 312 error anywhere.

I did the first two solutions and updated the drivers manually , and run the vcredistx86 In 2015 I got an error and ignore it , after doing this I start the game But i was checking files and did not stop
so I closed the game and in launch parameters Leave it blank again for that because as I said before , I did the first two solutions and asked me to have SKIPINTRO
Already in white gave close and run the game i opened without any problem
I hope serve some took
It took me 2 hours to give solution
Sorry if my english is not good
