AoE2HD is known to give trouble even to people with much better specs than Raspberry Pi.
thanks for the comments anyway
Very unlikely to happen.
Why?
The RPi is ARM based while the game and steam for that matter is only on x86.
Emulating an x86 processor is insanely slow on ARM, so good luck having the game remotely playable if you manage it.
Someone is probably working on getting AOE II working but the HD version is very, very unlikely to get ported anytime soon.
I wish it was a thing but oh well.
In fact, it is possible to emulate x86 linux/windows software on the Pi. Several commercial programs can do that, I personnaly use one to run online servers for Minecraft and Trackmania on my Pi. I'm also able to play most of 90s linux/windows games (I reguraly run Creatures 3 and Heroes of Might and Magic III on my Pi).
But I still think Age of Empires 2 (HD or base game) is a too demanding game when it comes to graphical capabilities. I know Raspbian graphical drivers are waaaay faster for the Pi 3 than the Pi 2, but I do not know if it'll be enough for that game. Testing would be nice considering some advanced 3D games like Quake 3 can run very smoothly on the Pi 3
Never said it wasn't possible to emulate x86, just that it was very slow. Iirc it's equivalent to something like an Intel i368 or something.
There should be a very important distinction made here.
Quake 3 was ported to the RPi. Port != Emulate. Quake 3 works due to it being ported to run specifically on the Pi, meaning it can take full advantage of the available 3D drivers.
AOE2:HD could work if it becomes open source and someone picks up the mantle, but until then it's almost a lost cause. Although, performance isn't guaranteed.
