Is it possible to play AOE multiplayer on Steam via LAN?

A couple of friends and I are packing our bags, and heading into the wilderness for a long weekend. We'll be bringing our laptops along so that we can play some games of Age of Empires. Seeing that there will be no internet connection, is it possible to play AOE over LAN? A friend of mine and I already tested it, and it didn't seem to work (It kept saying that I needed to be connected to steam to play multiplayer).

Is there any other way around this? Or am I SOL? (Because there's no internet where we are going)

You have to be connected to Steam for every kind of multiplayer. You can't even play via local network when there's no internet.

You can't no im afraid. I don't think AOE2HD is for that type of play, its online only, similar to SOCOM.

just get the 1999 version with you (along with userpatch to make it better) and you'll play LAN

You're SOL for AOE2HD. It will route the connection through a LAN so you get single digit ping, BUT it must first phonehome via an active internet connection. Is there cell coverage? Perhaps you could span a temporary wifi network from a mobile phone, get everyone into the lobby browser, then drop to the LAN connection for the hook-up.

camping is to get away from electronics lol, have a few beers and make a fire... dont take your laptop man..
but if you insist you can use your iphone on 3g as a hotspot and do it that way very simple.
Once you have a connection infact you can even do this on 2g... I connect to xbox live and play call of duty fine with my iphone using 3g so no reason why it wont allow you to do aoe, when FPS is 67ping.. not bad..

Well, we're not camping. We stay at a cabin in the middle of the woods. After a day of doing fun outdoor things (Shooting our guns, ATV driving, etc etc) THEN we play AOE.
