Fishing is very useful, fishing traps not as much.

Don't bother with fish traps.

Fishing ships are a great way to get food. If you are on a water map put lots of people on wood and build a dock as soon as you can. That way you can be making villagers and fishing boats (fishing ships are like extra villagers) and boom faster than you would normally. When you are waiting for Castle age research, you can keep making fishing ships, even though you can't make villagers.

Ocean fish are good, but shore fishing with fishing boats are suprisingly slow, contrary villagers who shorefish it's very fast. If you are a farcry from max pop, and has ample wood do make fish traps, but delete them as soon as you got max pop and make farms instead, much faster.

Yes Ocean fish are better. Look for the bigger jumping fish rather than the tadpoles by the shoreline if you are using fishing boats.

This link shows the gather rates for various types of resources (including different types of food). Deep sea fishing is supposedly the fastest of all, but I am not sure if this includes the time it takes for a ship to return to the dock.

This is true. The guide says this too. Realistically you don't put 1 person on a sheep on boar. Still I have always found boars to be a great source of food. How do you think boars compare with farms? I usually exhaust my sheep/boars before building farms.

Also with fishing ships there are often plenty of fishing locations so you can put one fishing ship on a location which means that in fact fishing ships are very fast way of gathering food - possibly the fastest.

Thoughts, ExTiNcT_SaNitY? How would you rate the effectiveness of the different food sources?

..and just to be nitpicky! Farms aren't active on the East side, villagers simply doesn't go there, therefore farms should first be placed on the east side of TC.

Fishing Boats or Farms, depending on the land to water ratio

I belive the numbers are misleading, the speed of eating an animal, will decrease with # of villagers.

These gather rates are the rate one villager/ship gathers food from the source,
EG: 1 vil gathers .330 food per second while eating a sheep.

Travel times are not included so efficiency will depend on gather points/dock locations ect.
But that goes for all resource gathereing.

Sheep are very efficient because you can eat them inside yout TC and have virtually no travel time, same for Boars once you lure them in. Boars (hunting) have high gather rate (0.408 food per second) and have alot of food to be gathered.

Farms and Deepsea are pretty equal overall deapsea might be a bit faster, they both lose efficiency the farther they get from the TC/Mill or dock
Deapsea gather a bit faster but generally have more travel time back to the dock.

The real advantage of fish boats as afLaSHman pointed out is you are not using a vil spot up on a farm, you can use those villagers on other resources (wood) while creating fish ships from docks.

Its like having a second TC in dark age and feudal age creating 2x more vils than you normally could.

ExTiNcT_SaNitY is talking about a bug that came from the original version.
When a vil gathers food from a farm he walks all over the farm patch to gather the food.
for some reason the vills walk around less on the right side (east) of your TC while farming.
Less travel time means you will gather food faster from a farm on the right side of your TC over a farm on the left.
