...you didn't change it anywhere else in the game, go click on a source of food, its still a big chunk of meat.

Thats hilarious. They change a couple of icons, some cliffs and fire animations, then slap HD in the title like its a whole new game.

I'd really appreciate it if they changed it back to a 'steak. Its easy to confuse with gold now (which has also been changed)

It has definitely had a bit more editing than just changing a few graphics. They had to replace nearly all of the network stack and the graphics engine was heavily outdated. The original game was practically nonfunctional due to its age. The best way to in which you can see this is the fact that the game actually works again, although it still has its bugs.

Oh, and I believe everything is just Png files, so it should be easy to mod the steak back.

Until today ive been playing the original AoE 2 Expansion /w 1.0e patch with no problems.
Compared to the old one... I'm sorry but it does not "work".

It's a bit strange to me that they changed those things, but fortunately the workshop integration gives us an easy way to modify it. That alone is a great addition imo.
