iPad Version? (hear me out)
I'd absolutely love to take a true AoE game on the go. The DS version was pretty good (DS standards...) but it was not AoE.

SINCE there is the single button mouse option..... wouldn't it be possible to port AoE II or I over to iOS or Android systems?

Hey? HEY!?

Port? No, except perhaps artwork. It would have to be coded from scratch.

A better question would be: would a tablet entry in the AoE series be financially viable? Given how payment-averse mobile/tablet owners are, I'm not so sure.

And I doubt anyone wants to go down the micropurchase road again!

Age of Empires II: HD Edition is fully compatible with the Windows Surface tablet, since that is running Windows 8 software (which is also compatible with AoE II: HD), and the touchscreen works with the game. So if you want AoEII: HD on the go, that's your ticket.

However, given that there are no plans to port AoEII: HD to the Mac at this moment, I see no reason for them to pursue an iPad version until they can develop both simultaneously.

You don't need them, but it is one payment model.

If we assume no microtransactions then the logical follow-up question is:

how much would you pay for a tablet iteration of the AoE series?

Considering how much people are whinging here about $20 for the PC remake, and considering the average costs of mobile/tablet software, I don't think it would be financially viable.

But you're welcome to program your own AoE tablet clone and sell it for $25 to prove me wrong ;-)

Idea: $6.99 for the base game, then $3.99 for the expansion? I don't know.

xD

You want them to code a new AoE from scratch and you're only going to pay them $11? Good luck with that!

Exactly. Never mind....
No one would buy it for $20......
Too many people would buy it for $10.....

You reminded me....
My wish still can come true... possibly.... that Nvidia shield.... with the Steam interconnectivity and game streaming.... But there are hardly any details on the software, etc. and who knows if a "tap" on the touch screen will constitute as a mouse click....

The game is supposed to run the same as on the Windows 8 version. Again, it's just Windows 8 being used on the tablet. The devs did say that using a tablet with touch is a bit tougher than using a keyboard and mouse - I'd attribute this to the loss of easy hotkeys. But that would be the same problem if you had an iPad version. So there's no getting around that. But if you tap the touch screen, that does constitute as a mouse click.

No hotkeys? Ugh, that'd be awful. Better than *nothing* I guess, but not by much!

Doesn't need to be HD and you could probably run the original game on a flipping water filter.

I think that single mouse option requires the escape key or move/attack-move commands to manage the units correctly. For instance, clicking a unit and then clicking elsewhere, will it move the unit it deselect it? You could lock selection so escape is needed to deselect and clicking will give the move command, or to move the unit you must hit M or A for move/attack-move commands to be applied to the click.
I-pads can get a little keyboard, then the problem comes in with camera controls. Selling an additional device for camera controls would suck for people who'd want to play this on an I-pad.

They already said: no Linux/Mac version (=no porting).
