0 A.D. or this..
So I've been searching for a reason to purchase this... vs. downloading 0 A.D. (free). Has anyone tried the latter.

It has been ages since I've played AoE II (I probably have the disks somewhere), but just probing to see what people say about the two games.

no idea what 0 A.D. so I recommend this game :)

aoe2 of course. 0ad is forever in alpha and there's no one to play multiplayer with
0 AD is heavily unoptimized from what I've seen. You could also buy the Empire Earth games on GoG.

Age of empires 2, both games have their ups and downs but if you want massive armies and more strats buy age of empires 2.

As for AoE2... Is MP very populated ??? Is there a Quick Match Making System... one that also accounts for ELO?

They do have a quick match but it's been disabled for quite some time. As long as teams are balanced you get elo for any standard game.

There are a lot of beginners that play. There is less if you are in the higher tier. If you like scenarios there are always CBA lobbies up.

so your ELO is visable, and if there are unbalanced teams it wont Rank the Game?
Mr_F0NG Nov 11, 2015 @ 11:05am
Correct, it's a number displayed to the left of your user name. You can also see it from the main menu along with your over all rank. If teams are unbalanced or it's a FFA you will see a message in the lobby that lets you know it's unranked. It goes away if teams are balanced. You can also create a lobby that is unranked so it won't count even if teams are balanced.

Last Questions... and thank you for your answers:

Do a majority play Ranked??? Do a majority play 1v1 or team play??? What do you see as an average game time???
Mr_F0NG Nov 11, 2015 @ 11:12am
Most lobbies are ranked, there are more team games than 1v1's Game time depends on what skill range you are playing at. 20-30 minutes might be a good average. That can vary vastly though depending on map. I've had some matches go over the 1 hour mark close to 2 at the longest. Again that depends on map, game settings, skill level, and how aggressive the players are.

1v1's are usually less. I play all team games myself.

Thank You!!!

Is this the same with AoE3??? or is AoE2 more popular?

Aoe 2 has a significantly larger population. I play 3 once and awhile with a buddy because he can't order age 2 while he is deployed in korea.

You are welcome, happy to answer any other questions.

0ad is very fun, but we are talking about 2 different time settings. Antiquity for 0ad and middle ages for aoe 2. Been playing 0ad for about 3 years. Atm it is in a much better condition that it used to be. It still has problems with units, too many on field and the game starts to get choppy. It offers new innovative ideas that no other similar rts has delivered like soldiers also working on economy. You can have 10 roman legionaires chopping wood and they can also build. Though obviously limited to what they can build.
All units are scaled correctly unlike aoe 2. But aoe2 excels in competitive side.
With more players and a food soundtrack.
I hope 0ad comes on steam as a paid product as i hate f2p because they become p2w.
To answer your question, get both. 0ad is free atm.
The only downside is, 0ad is free.

0 ad has been in development since like ... Idk, 04? It's still in alpha. It is being worked on, but I wasn't a fan of the graphics. (The units are hard for me to distinguish)

I have it on my computer, I just didn't have fun with it. If it had a working campaign mode or lively multiplayer mode instead of trying to make single player random map mode I would enjoy it more though!

So much promise, so little delivery. The problem with EE is that it fits twice as much game into three times as many ages, so each age feels rather spartan.
