They colonised parts of Africa too. We had some pretty big dsicussions about it all afew weeks ago in one thread :)

Portugal was a Empire with many colonies in Africa....
Thats an absurd argument. Almost every European colonial power had colonized Africa (Scramble of Africa). The British more so than any other.

Except those civs are in game already, and Portugal wasn't until today. So it's nowhere near absurd at all.

Many colonial powers colonized Africa, but Portugal was the first. The Portuguese were included in The African Kingdoms because they were the first colonial power to focus on Africa.

They had a lasting impact on the areas they colonized, and became an empire in the regions in their own right.

Yes it's absurd. I never heard of such terminology used in history.

Many colonial powers colonized Africa, but Portugal was the first. Similar to how the Spanish were included in Forgotten Empires because they were the first colonial power to affect the region, the Portuguese were included in The African Kingdoms because they were the first colonial power to focus on Africa.

Both of these civs had a lasting impact on the areas they colonized, and became empires in the regions in their own right.

Correction, Spanish were not included in Forgotten Empires but in Conquerors Expansion.

The Expansion is about the African Kingdoms, which includes the first european power to influence them.

Its still about the African Kingdoms and African history in general.

The devs could have said "Hey, youre right, no need for Portugal"

I'm glad they didnt think that way or change the expansion name just for the few OCD kids among us who spazz out over such small things.

There is difference between the terms "African Kingdoms" and "African History".

Portugal has never been called an African Kingdom. Just like the British Empire had never been called Asian Kingdom or Indian Empire even when the vast majority of British subjects were Indian.

Such terminology does not exist.

Exact , Portuguese colonialism of the African coast was the first ever and it started in the XV-XVI century , with the opening of the route to India by Vasco da Gama , made by passing the Cape of Good Hope , the colonization of the African coast allowed the Portuguese to create ports where ships could stop over during long journeys to the Far East. This allowed the start of a spice trade with India and the nations most important facing the Oceans ( Mali , Ethiopian , Bantu and Somalian empire ) .

However do not forget that AoE2 covers a period of history that reaches the early Renaissance , the second half of XVI century included . So why argue about something as frivolous , the Portuguese were the Civ. more demand by community and now no longer good for a subtlety !
I think the important thing is to play and have fun with this new DLC !!!

Who gives a ♥♥♥♥ what historical arguments we can provide? Apparently lots of people have been begging for Portugal, therefore any excuse not to exclude it from this expansion is a good one. I'm pretty sute the developers knew before this thread existed that Portugal is not in Africa. Should they have gone with a different title, just because Portugal was part of the package? The Mayans were in "The Conquerers", when in fact they weren't really conquerers.
