Renewable resources.
I remember in the settlers 4 it allowed you to grow trees, i think that would be cool to have the ability to grow trees in age of empires 2. Would be a casual thing, so it wouldn't ruin competitive matches.
And i also remember a mod a few years back which allowed you to train fattened sheep for 50 food, and when they spawn, they have 100 food, but over time their food count increased to 200.
Countries like Britain could get 250 food, or 20 % to speed of sheep getting fat.
Also a green house that grows berry bushes would be nice.
I think these would be cool additions.

For most matches this would have nearly no effect. Unless you used said trees to make a barrier.

Yeah that could be a bad thing. Although quite amusing it would be xD.
But these trees could be special in that villagers or scouts could destroy them fast.
This could be an early tactic for scouts, to destroy any trees that an enermy plants. Although thinking more deeply about that brings up the question of, who would even build trees early in game. When most if not all start locations have loads of trees to get you at least into castle age.
Then again you could plant trees near your towb centre and quickly chop them down, instead of wasting 175 wood on a lumber camp. Which could go towards another baracks. Something like that.
Or it could be made that trees can't be build too far from a town centre.

If I remember correctly, During the development of AoK (by Ensemble Studios) they experimented with re-newable resources. This included trees that could grow back after a period of time and deer re-populating and such. But the effect turned out to be unbalanced and buggy.

It would be very cool if this could be implemented.
Does not even have to be automatic.

I could see something akin to the SW:GB 'Animal Nursery' working. The tree thing is probably a bit more troublesome, unless it takes a minute or more for trees to grow to any size worthy of harvesting.
