[STORE PAGE LIVE, AUGUST 2019 RELEASE] Request: AoE1 + Rise of Rome (Expansion) on Steam

(09/06/2019): Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition has been officially announced at E3 2019 along with the Steam store page being launched.

In addition, Microsoft have also now launched the Steam store page for AoE 1 Definitive Edition.

Microsoft have confirmed this will release on Steam during August this year along with a beta period!

Well done Microsoft for delivering on your promise as to what we asked for since AoE2 HD Edition first released in 2013.

Looks like all definitive editions will remain Windows 10 only, even on Steam. Shame that Windows 7 / 8.1 are not getting much love, but being realistic they don't have much time left in terms of support. Still, we wanted a Steam release and that's what we are getting.

(30/05/2019): Age of Empires I + II + III Definitive Editions will now be coming to Steam as per Microsoft's announcement here: https://www.ageofempires.com/news/age-of-empires-definitive-editions-are-coming-to-steam/

Fantastic to see that Microsoft listened and have made the right decision here, especially at this time up of upheaval of exclusive launches in the PC gaming industry with Epic Games. Hopefully this example by Microsoft will show other companies not to stray away from Steam and that customers should be able to decide what platform they want to play on.

Still not much word on Age of Empires IV and if this be on Steam or not, but this thread is for AoE1.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(21/08/2017): Age of Empires IV has been announced, 12 years since the last title release, 7 years if you count the last expansion for AoE3! (this does not take AoE: Online into account as that shut down in 2014). Age of Empires: Definitive Edition has a confirmed release date of October 19th, (which makes it exactly 20 years + 4 days since AoE1 first released in 1997.

"Remasters" have also been announced for AoE2 and AoE3!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(12/06/2017): Microsoft have announced a full on remaster of Age of Empires 1 during the PC Gamer conference at E3 today. The remaster of the original game will be titled "Age of Empires: Definitive Edition". This release will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Age of Empires series!

Will be fully remastered with 4K graphics, re-orchestrated soundtrack, major gameplay improvements, new narrative, Xbox Live multiplayer and achievements.

Finally, there will be a classic mode available for those that want to play the game in its original look!

Received confirmation and this game will indeed be a Windows Store exclusive (Windows 10 only) on release, that means no Steam version and no support for Windows 7 / 8.1. Disappointing to say the least given that all the other AoE games (and Age of Mythology) that were remastered had come straight to Steam. Perhaps this will be changed as time goes on.

Original post:

Hi all,

As you all know - AoE2 HD, AoE3: Complete Collection and now Age of Mythology: Extended Edition have arrived on Steam (along with their respective expansions).

The only AoE based game that isn't on Steam now is AoE1, along with the Rise of Rome expansion that was released with it back in 1997 / 1998.

AoE1 isn't really considered to be the most popular AoE game in the whole franchise, however, it is the game that started it all and I would love to see this come to Steam and then be able to have the whole AoE series in my Steam library once and for all!

Post here if you would like to voice your support AoE1 + Rise of Rome (expansion) to be brought to Steam. We would likely see it come as a 2 in 1 as a "Remastered" or "Enhanced" edition, similar to its predecessor releases on Steam.

This thread has become quite popular, so Microsoft will be able to keep an eye on it to see how much demand there is for it, which would hopefully have a higher chance of the game being re-done and released on Steam.

Microsoft DO have the source code for AoE1 (probably on a load of floppy discs :P).

It doesn't look like the game can be simply ported into the AoE2 engine as some people have suggested as the AoE1 / AoE2 engines had A LOT changed in them between the two game's original releases. It would likely still be in its original condition (but modified for modern systems) as far as game engine goes.

Thoughts?

Might be a cool idea to bring it up to scratch a little - so introduce some AoE2 features and interfaces etc. Essentially make it as if it was anohter version of AoE2, but with AoE1 eras, civs, campaigns etc.

Fun idea, but remember: The team had trouble (insane trouble) getting AoE II working. AoE I may be even further gone and harder to fix up. Also, I personally consider AoE II far superior gameplaywise and only really care about AoE for the nostalgia value.

AoE 1 actually has a huge Asian community on places like Garena. It averages well over 10,000 players for AoE 1 during peak playing hours, they have made somewhat of an e-sport out of it. There is obviously a language barrier though.

If they took age II and replaced all the midevil stuff with ancient things the game would be better i rather see spartens and legionares fighting then just knights and swords men it would be way better they could have each greek city state and its own unicke unit see the thing that really sucked with aoe was that the units bubmped in to each other didnt go information and the graphice were strange. aoe 2 is my favorite over all age of empires games plus in aoe there were no unicke untis the onlt thing i liked about that game was the sound track. so i hope then combine aoe to aoe 2 in a mod

I grew up playing AoE II and III. I never owned or played the first AoE. I'd definitely be interested in a re-release of that first game. :)

I totally agree. People like to complete collections. Even if they release a not so good Age 1 on Steam, people will buy just to have the entire collection an I am one of them.
Age 1 was part of my childhood...I would love to play it all over again here on Steam.

There is even a guy who is working really hard to improve Age 1 (http://aoe.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/aoecgi/display.cgi?action=st&fn=17&tn=6327&st=2#post3)

They could make with him what they did with the creators of the Forgotten Empires, Bring him in and release it on Steam.

Would love to have AOE 1 Gold (HD) on Steam.

I fully support this! And yes I'd prefer if it used the upgraded Aoe 2 engine. You can do much more with the Aoe 2 editor.

For all of your interest, the person doing the AoE to AoK Conversion (putting AoE1 on the AoE2 engine) on AoKH is already on the AoF team, going by a different name (AoF 1302). He happens to be one of our main campaign designers in AoF!

Working with aoe_scout (the guy doing the UPatch for AoE1) would be cool too. However, these sort of things aren't in our power to decide. Focus is currently on AoE2, an endeavor which we are (quite happily) still working with MS and SB on.

I love these sort of threads- it's really cool to see the level of community interest in other games of the AoE franchise as well after all this time!

A nice idea, I miss priest a lot. please release it as such and do not modify it, it will loose its unique game play if modified. If released number one buyer here.
