Add to control group?
I know this has been talked about in other discussion threads. However is there no other way to add to a control group then selecting your control group shift add then rebind? In most other RTS, if you simply do shift+# it will automatically add.

I dont know any RTS game that would add units instead of replacing them in control groups

Starcraft 2 - http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Hotkeys#Overview
"If you wish to add units to a control group without overwriting the units already in the group you may also press Shift+#."
Starcraft 1 Broodwar
Warcraft III

This anoyed me to, therefor I combined the aoe2-hotkeys via autohotkey.
While Ctrl+# creates a new control-group, Ctrl+doublepress # is my custom hotkey to add a unit to an existing control-group.

Is this a macro of some sort or a 3rd party program? I never use those, I consider them cheating. (Not claiming u cheat, as Ive no idea what that thing is, but I want to point out they arent needed and pros DO NOT use them)

Shift+# SELECTS the control group in addition to the units alrdy selected. So one can select many ctrlgroups or different unit types etc.

"Add to ctrl-group" is hence simply: select units wanted to add, Shift+# the group u want add troops in, Ctrl+# the same number.

wasnt there some way to do just that in the original release? have to look for my guide for it and reread it (if i find it) maybe that works here too, was a second key which had to be pressed while pressing ctrl (or maybe another key instead of ctrl don't know anymore, its a feature i never used much, but there was a way to add or remove some units of one group

As a Noob, I dont use much military hotkeys anyways unless its archers/skirms war, in which I use unit-specific groups and maybe a third group for flanking units or siege. So my way is "fast enough" for me at least.
Hmm. I just re-select and Ctrl+number again. It's the same amount of key presses as Ctrl++ or whatever. You have to remember the number of the group anyway, so nothing lost.

I think Autohotkey-scripts can be seen as a macro. Generally speaking regarding usefull scenarios for AoE, I think the convenience and customizing aspect is far more important than a considerable gameplay advantage. For example my most important hotkey is the space-bar, because its my custom hotkey for Ctrl/Shift and very easy to reach for an untrained, sometimes rarely playing Player (Imo unlike the Ctrl/Shift-Key). This is only possible with macros, but I dont think I would have any advantage against anyone (there has once been a big discussion about hotkey-scripts and mouse-macros on aoczone, but I can not remember any realy clear conclusion). Btw I'm still a singleplayer only (unfortunately I don't find enough time to play regularly), so I'm only cheating against the AI :-p.

To come back to the op, I find this kind of hotkey usefull, because if I have a group of lets say archers which I actively use and I'm continously creating new archers, every time a new one pops out I can easily add him to the existing group, no matter where they are. How do you guys or the pros handle such situations?

I actually dont use space-bar at all, or to be more specific, I dont use my thumb for key-pressing at all. On a basic WASD formation for my left hand (which my hand automatically takes most times), I find Shift and Ctrl very accessible and the most logical and ez-to-use with littlefinger in tandem with #-buttons 1-5 (after of which my palm reach diminishes, but I rarely use more than 3 groups anyways).

edit: I use thumb for Alt WHEN I rarely want to use Ctrl+M for market or Alt+D/G.

I'm not a pro, but what I would do is:

Press the # key to select the pre-existing group (archers on the other side of the map)
Double-click a newly created archer (selects all units of the same type on the screen)
Press Ctrl+#
