What is your unit grouping & formation strategy?
How do you group your units?

Do you group all ranged units into group 1, all calvary into group 2, group all kinds of unit into one battalion, etc. ?

Personally I don't like to micro a lot due to the sheer amount of units you can have and am trying to find a good strategy to play the game without putting myself at disadvantage so would like to hear how everyone group their units and do you use any formation?

Double click a unit and you group all those units on the screen, if you use several ranged units you have to do it once for every type of ranged unit

Formations can be used to dodge mangonels/onagers by using the '2 groups' formation

For me 1 is ranged 2 is melee. 3 is artillery/utilty 4 is cavalry 5 if needed is trebs/cannons/navy 7 is builder villies. 9 is a grouping of military buildings to queue men at. If I'm using a civ that is one dimensional 1 is for my elite troops 2 is for my reserve.
I like to play at 200 pop, give or take 50, which allows you to micromanage things fairly effectively.

I tend to simply assign hotkeys only when I've got more than 40 units - even then, I'll usually just use double-click.

All my tactics are different - modded Siege Onager + BBC + Scorp spam just goes all on one hotkey, a Turtle Ship spam just is a double-click, a Samurai rally-point I don't bother with hotkeys...

Damn good question.
No perfect way of doing it, it all depends on your strategy.
If you want an all out push, you'll most likely want to divide by ranged/cavalry/siege/infantry and so on.
Best strategies are mixed, however: I'd like to always be able to have one (or more) group of units (usually cavalry, sometimes ranged) to harass my enemies, while I build my main force. Against the AI, it's fun to harass with cavalry and, when they send pikes, run away but send a couple of horseman back (while main force is chased by pikes) and keep on harassing.
It'd be awesome if we could «select all military units» or, even better, «all siege units» because my resolution isn't the best, and sometimes we have units scattered all over a big map.

It would be helpful on LudiKRIS size to select all idle military units. The minimap is too small to be of any real use, even on Military view. If I'm in a hurry and don't create control groups beforehand, I'll lose a few dozen units scattered here and there around the map.
My starting scout unit is always "0". My boar and deer hunter group is always "1" and then they get replaced by military units (usually a fast reaction force such as knights or cavalry archers) when I send them to farm. My main siege group is always "7" but I can't tell you why.

For me it depends on the civ and strategy
1 / 2 : for main unit type, usually gold-heavy units that shouldn't be wasted (for exp janissary and hand cannoneers for Turks)
2 / 3 : for support units ( for exp hussars and/or champions to protect the janissarys)
4 / 5 : siege units
