What's the " best" age of empire game?
I'm looking to pickup one of them, just want to know which one has the best gameplay / story / content / mechanics, don't care too much about grahpics, unless they terrible.

Age 2 has the biggest population of any age series game, it is indeed the best one of them.

thankyou, that's what all the forums seem to say, I appreciate your input.

AoE1 is my favorite, but I like 2 a lot as well. I wasn't a fan of 3 though, mostly just because I don't care much for that era and I'd rather keep my historical rts games a bit more primative. Honestly, I'd say get this AoE2HD remake since it's still being actively updated (we just today got a patch!) and supports modern operating systems and actually has something of a community. AoE1 can be difficult to work with on newer OS's and just isn't worth the headache.

I'd say 2, it refined what age 1 did good
AoM is also good, but its something different
Aoe3 isnt quite my taste, but not a bad game either

Seeing the name of this Forum you'd probably get flooded with AoE2 as the answer. I like AoE2 and Age of Mythology both equally well - AoE2 has better game balance while having a lot more variety in effective strategies. Age of Mythology is just plain a lot of fun, and has a lot of character.

AoE1 and 3 are both alright games, but they both show their age in really bad ways. Also, in my opinion, 3 is just plain ugly to look at. Somehow Age of Empires 2 has just aged really, really well.

Age of Empires 2 > Age of Empires 1 > Age of Empires 3

Age of Empires 1 and 2 are very similar games. AoE2 is just more advanced. Better graphics. Units can walk across farms. Better hotkeys. Large population. Features like Gates in walls etc.

Age of Empires 3 was a different game. And not a very good one IMHO.

I agree with this. Would say:
AOE2 > AOE1 > AOM > AOE3 (Just to insert AOM in there)

I've been playing since the AOE1 expansion Rise of Rome. AOE1 was awesome, but AOE2 beats it because of the gameplay improvements with smart villagers and better balance. AOM was interesting for a change. It had some neat ideas and was fun to play for an AOE veteran, but wasn't as good as the previous 2 games.

AOE3 jumped the shark. Not the worst game I've ever played, but definitely not up to the AOE name.

Age of Empires 3 had the potential to be better then 2. Graphically it was but they really dumbed down and simplified the gameplay to the point that it didn't feel like there was much strategy. Taking out formations from that period was the single worst design decision I have seen in any historical RTS game.

Not played AOE 3, and only played a trifle of AOM, but I'd say AOK is the best, it takes what AOE did well and refines it.
