I've always felt that RTS were a good exercise for the head. Since you've got to manage a bazillion things at once, your brain is constantly moving back and forth. It provides great stimulation and therapy.

But I've played with some strong idiots, so I don't believe it makes anyone smarter.

It improves multi-tasking I'd say. You have to make sure your citizens stay working and assign them new tasks if it's needed. Managing armies and keeping them strong with constant recruits is another point too.

As such with any other activity that requires your brain to be very busy: yes, gaming is good to keep your brain healthy but everything in moderation. And it's no replacement for actual learning so go learn something if you want to actually increase your IQ.

As I understand it, intelligence is a natural born trait and will not be increased. (It can be decreased by killing brain cells through drug use and so on.) You can learn new knowledge, maybe even some wisdom, by continuing positive habits. You can do many activities to keep your brain in good shape - Age of Empires definitely makes use of several areas of the brain - and of course you can learn plenty about logical thinking methods, human psychology, and so on. It's a good game to build new neural connections and improve certain cognitive functions beyond just the typical hand-eye coordination improvement that is commonly attributed to playing fast paced computer games.

I think one's skill in Tetris can be a good indicator of intelligence. It's abstract, has little to no learning curve, and it requires the player to make the best possible decisions in a very short timeframe.

Hmmmm, I think a study on the types of games played by different users vs their IQ would be a better approach to this. Maybe a Monkey-Survey test?

I personally don't feel "more intelligent" as a result of playing AoE II or any Strategy Game.

Surely depends:
- which lvl you play it on
- how frequently
- how much thought you put into the game
- if you better youself
- set goals
..etc

..if you play it as a complete 1400 HD n00b, then no.
