I've played a lot of AoE in the 90's and early 2000's but I don't really know what to do when all the relics have been captured.
Do I need to go looking for them? Exploring the map? How does it work?
Relics are scattered across a map at start (usually 5 per map seed though more per larger map). You can see if a monastery has a relic if it has a flag on the top of it.
If they are all captured you simply need to destroy the monastery containing one to end the timer, and probably best gank it.
Indians have tech that increases relic gold and Aztec teams get more gold per relic
In the Standard game modes of random map and death match if a player has all the relics a countdown will begin for so many years like a wonder for the player to win. Select conquest in victory conditions will turn off relic and wonder victories.
Regicide does not have relic and wonder victory conditions.
Many campaigns have specific relic victory conditions including shorter years.
The Hun tech Atheism adds more time to a relic victory.
You should have changed the victory setting if you wanted to lose the game like that
