Why would they release the old version that doesn't even run under newer versions of Windows properly, if they just developed an upgraded version that is compatible with newer computers? The Steam version still offers you the "original experience" if you choose to play the "original dataset" which is selectable in the game. The newer expansions are then all disabled.

But why does releasing on GOG have to mean only releasing an old version of the game on there? They could release the new version on GOG.

It's M$ we are dealing with ...they are simply alergic to concepts like no-DRM & multiple device installs(got a brother/sister/father u wana lan with ?! tough luck the f' er needs to cough up the $ for its own license if he wants to join the fun)...

Good old games has lots of classic games in their old version, so I had no way of knowing what the OP meant. I assumed he meant they could release a downloadable version of the original game patched with userpatch. The problem here is that userpatch isn't an official Microsoft "thing", so MS wouldn't make such a release.

Re-releasing the current version of the game (HD) on GOG would be quite some effort, as it's so deeply integrated into Steam (multiplayer, workshop, patch distribution etc.). I guess it could be done, but doesn't seem likely because a) of the effort, and b) because it's not MS's policy to release on as many platforms as possible and c) the attention of the developers will go towards the new Definitive Edition anyway. We don't even know if the HD edition will get another expansion set.

Yeah about that, at least some aoe2 versions had a broken cd check, causing the game to be able to be played while there was ANY cd in the tray xD or even none if you clicked a few times on ignore, only issue was that the music from the cd in your tray would be played instead of the original one

Also i believe aoe2 gold edition or something didnt need a cd either, or at least mine doesnt since i can handily have it on an usb stick and can just copy it from one pc to the next ever since i bought it, so they either wisened up at one point or i had a weird copy of it, not that i complain xD i needed te serial key to install it but afterwards everything was fine and working without the cd in the tray, still have the cd lying around here somewhere but i dont really need it

Are you sure the DVD version of AOE 2 Gold Edition is DRM-free? I'd like to know before buying it (used copy).

according to some others its not; so my guess is a faulty batch where someone added a no-cd crack to the master disk from which the others were pressed or something

well or plain old buggyness allowing that to happen on some disks/one batch
