umnn what? original game does run on win 10 and echo didn't speak about original game as he is commenting here...
Re-releasing the current version of the game (HD) on GOG would be quite some effort, as it's so deeply integrated into Steam (multiplayer, workshop, patch distribution etc.). I guess it could be done, but doesn't seem likely because a) of the effort, and b) because it's not MS's policy to release on as many platforms as possible and c) the attention of the developers will go towards the new Definitive Edition anyway. We don't even know if the HD edition will get another expansion set.
Also i believe aoe2 gold edition or something didnt need a cd either, or at least mine doesnt since i can handily have it on an usb stick and can just copy it from one pc to the next ever since i bought it, so they either wisened up at one point or i had a weird copy of it, not that i complain xD i needed te serial key to install it but afterwards everything was fine and working without the cd in the tray, still have the cd lying around here somewhere but i dont really need it
well or plain old buggyness allowing that to happen on some disks/one batch
